Strength isn't the most important stat for LBs, at least not good ones. Even as a hard hitter, I don't think maxing out strength, and putting equipment in tackling and neglecting speed, agility and vision is a good start to a LBs career.

then what would be a good start?

Don't spend any skill points. Don't buy any equipment.
Train speed/agility or agility/vision until they hit around 30.
Take one of them up to the cap with the skill points you've been saving.
Continue training valuable stats up to 30ish
When you get enough SP take the first stat up to 61, or the next stat up to 48.
When you get some decent cash pick up some advanced equipment and pump it up with the bonus tokens you didn't waste on temp boosts. Put all point into speed or agility.
Round out your player, the way you want him. As a HH I'd say power tackler and sure tackler VA are essential, try to land some monster hit or force fumble AEQ.
Continue on into greatness. or at least respectability.

Do not spend any skill points until you train your stat to around 30. There is too much value to be had through training at this point. Once you train a stat to 30 then take it up to the cap (48) the stat you choose is up to you. I like agility, but speed is also a popular choice. Some people go with vision, but I don't agree with that.

Always train on intense. You will need the bonus tokens later. Only train on normal when its time to go shopping and that won't be for a while.

no what do i do with the 17 points you get when you make the player....

I haven't made a new player in a while that's all new to me. Put as much as you can into agility or speed, and whatever's left into the other. I would guess.

example new LB (Lv. 1 LB)
Ht/Wt: 6'0", 238lbs

Experience, Skill Points, and Cash
Money: $2500
Daily Salary: $0
Skill Points: 15
Training Points: 7
Bonus Tokens: 0
Veteran Points: 0
Next Level: 0/1000

Attributes
Physical Attributes
Strength: 10
Speed: 10
Agility: 26.33
Jumping: 8.67
Stamina: 11.33
Vision: 10.67
Confidence: 10

Football Skills
Blocking: 10
Catching: 10
Tackling: 10
Throwing: 8
Carrying: 8
Kicking: 8
Punting: 8

Special Abilities
Hard Hitter Abilities
Snarl: 0
Aura of Intimidation: 0
Diving Tackle: 0
Monster Hit: 0
Defense General: 0

Pass Rusher Abilities
Trash Talk: 0
The Glare: 0
Shed Blocks: 0
Swat Ball: 0
Big Sack: 0

I would put all equipment in speed.

My plan would be to train agility/vision until ready to cap agility. Train agility/vision until ready to 2nd cap agility.

Train vision on normal while taking agility to 3rd cap until vision was set up to cap.

Switch training to tackling/speed.

Take vision to 3rd cap while training tackling speed.

Roll vision/agility over.

Take tackling to 2nd or 3rd cap (depending on MLB/ILB or OLB). Then take speed to 5th cap.

Not going through the whole process, but that would be my original plan.

depends completely on the type of LB you want. for an MLB, i would start training either agility + vision or strength + tackling...whether you start taking agility, strength, or tackling up first depends entirely on what you wanna do. for a block shedding MLB who will make plays, go strength first imo (agi could work too). for a FFum guy, go tackling. Agility is probably the most versatile of all...but not necessarily the best imo.
