400 days I hit today on my cornerback, it came quick and will end faster. I’ve had the privilege to play what I like to think as one of the more enjoyable positions for over 10+ seasons and it’s been fun.
I don’t post a lot on these forums, or forums in general as I’m more of a learner then a talker.
“We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.”
From my own perspective I’ve had the luxury of building a pretty decent corner. Bragging is not my forte, so I may not be the most popular/well known player and that’s fine I just want people to look in the bottle from another perspective.
Little background on my corner, season 3 & 4 I played in Oceania AA on my friend’s team. We eventually got demoted to Oceania A in season 5. From season 5 to season 8 we promoted every season until eventually the Pro’s in season 8. I was level 36 when I entered the pros, boosted to 39 at the beginning of the season. Since then my guy has been in either the Pro League or World League with a brief stay in AAA during season 10 when my pro team disbanded. I’ve also started my entire career with the help of some great owners.
With that being said I haven’t had a ton of experience with WR’s my level and racking up big time stat numbers I took on the opportunities and challenges of what the game could offer.
One term that I’ve grown to hate is expert. I’m certainly not an expert. What to know what I’ve learned in 10 seasons? Not a god damn thing. There are people who talk like an expert and people who learn like an expert and you have to learn to be great.
"The dumbest people I know are those who know it all.”
The simple fact is if you have logic and know the simple basics of the game you are an expert, building CB’s isn’t rocket science. You know just about everything that I do but it’s how you apply it that makes us different. Some people may have made multiple corners, have ran numbers, looked at every detail possible and had success but there are far too many variables in this game to pinpoint attributes and go yea that’s what made me better, that what separates me, what makes my guy special.
Cornerback is a very, very hard position to see attributes translated onto your performance. Nobody in this game can sit back add 5 points to vision and be like yeah I’m really good now, I see my guy staying with the WR much better, making breaks better, jumping the ball like a pro. No that’s ignorance.
My duty as a cornerback is simple, not allow the opposing WR to catch the ball. It can’t be that simple can it? Well it is. This is where it starts getting tricky; most people get caught up in glitz and glamour of everything that a CB can spend points on. The one thing I want to do is enhance my ability to cover therefore making me a better CB, makes sense doesn’t it? This is why I normally focus on main attributes and SA’s that will enhance the only job I have. I don’t want to run when I can drive.
Let’s take a look at the attributes we have to choose from strength, confidence, carrying. While some have opinions on what these do, nobody knows the exactly if they help or not so why spend points in them. I’m trying to gain an advantage and I’ll stick to things I’m fairly certain will help me.
(I have fairly high strength because I capped it fairly early on before jackhammer was nerfed. I can’t say that it’s helped me or not)
Catching, this ability is highly debatable I don’t know and I don’t care. I’ll pass. Jumping, logic tells us that being able to jump high will increase your ability to do things in the air like deflect passes so yeah I think that helps me cover better but when has Bort ever used logic? Tackling, not only do I despise this skill for most positions this sure ain't going to help me cover, no thanks.
Next we have the big three speed, agility and vision. One of these we know for certain works and that’s speed. I’m not Albert Einstein but I’m pretty sure I can see if my dot is following the other dot. You want Agility? Sure, why the fuck not we’ve been told to believe that it affects our ability to cut and in my book that helps with keeping up with receivers. Last but not least vision, I have no clue what it does it could help aliens reach outer space but it sounds good and I personally like to think it helps in every aspect of a CB.
So now we have two things that we know a corner needs and will help enhance us in speed and agility. Then we have two attributes that logic tells us should help us better at covering in vision and jumping. If I want to gain an advantage, increase my ability to do my job better then ugh, spending points on these sounds good to me.
This is where the expert talkers come in. Listen; if Noah had the opportunity to build his ark faster don’t you think he’d take it? These people preach, preach, preach that you only need so and so to be effective and spending points in other places is better. Fine, I have no fucking clue and neither do they.
What I do know is speed, agility and vision will help improve my player and that’s all I know and all you need to know. I like to enhance my ability to cover in any way possible so if it means going a little above and beyond to achieve that I’m ok with that because I know no matter what I’m improving as a player with every single point spent and if I can gain an advantage in any way possible that’s what I’m going to do. I can’t tell you that 100 speed/100 agility is better than 90 speed/90 agility but I know I’ve spent my skill points on attributes that will make me better and in my estimate that’s a win in a game that’s unpredictable.
I was able to play at a high level and against higher levels for a very long time by just increasing the main attributes and not touching SA’s, I didn’t spend a skill point in SA’s until level 56 and since I had higher physical attributes and I could cover it made putting a single point into an SA that much sweeter.
The good thing with SA’s is that it tells us actually what it does, no guessing work needed. So I want to keep enhancing my ability to cover. I’ve already set myself up by increasing attributes that I know will help me and now I can focus on making my player better by getting things that improve our job. Swat Ball, increases the ability to knock ball down sounds good. Super Vision, the ability to see developing plays, yep that helps. Shut Down Coverage, speed, agility & pass deflecting? Me like that. Change Direction, make cutting easier. That will help in coverage.
Adding to these SA’s with the attributes that we know help us, puts us in the best possible position to succeed. Then it’s in the sims hands but I at least know I’ve done everything I can to improve my player the best possible way.
Now that we got this player that should be built well for the game, it’s now time for the most underrated and possibly biggest ability a CB has and that’s personal tactics. You can have the greatest built CB in the game but with the incorrect settings you will not be living up to your potential IMO. This is what makes good corners, great the ability to adjust and learn. From my experience the closer you play the more of a chance you have to be faked so I like to play off a bit. In my younger years I played really close/aggressive and that was fine but the sim changes and so does your player. Right now I play anywhere from -75 to -72 aggressive. Two seasons ago I played in USA Pro and had a very good year on -75 for the most part and semi aggressive. Last season in WL I stuck with the same settings and had a subpar season at the end of the season in scrimmages I switched over to aggressive and saw my guy really flourish so I’ve stuck with those settings and has done me well. Play around, find what you like, if you spend skill points in speed or agility you might find it better to play looser this is a really huge part in my opinion in the overall success of your player.
This is how I built my corner with logic, the ability to fail and do something others at the time would have likely laughed at.
“The best teacher is experience learned from failures.”
What have I learned in 400 days? Nothing, but I’ve absorbed, listened and gained as much knowledge as I could and in the end I’ve built a CB that I like and built on my own.
