Lots of guys trying to figure out how to build TEs. I don't know why this build worked, but he ended the season as the #2 TE 2 seasons in a row (was #1 until the last game in season 12). Some stats from last season:

Caught 75% of the passes where he was targeted
5 TDS (not huge numbers, but he wasn't just a receiving TE)
35 Pancakes in season 12

The season before when he was more of a blocker he had 80 pancakes.

While this isn't World league, AAA is not a slouch league for a level 60 guy, without custom EQ and 2 upgrades short on 3 pieces of EQ.

Feel free to flame, but I am using this build to go after a much better combo TE as I don't believe a TE can be sucessful player if his build is overly specialized any more.

I don't understand why people believe this.

Quite simply - I've seen it shut down as an OC at the WL Level, at the Pro level...and I've shut them down as a DC in AA. Through tagging and defensive custom spots a DC can shut down a specialized player in this game, especially once they have been identified as such.

Sure you can go about tricking the defense by putting your receiving TE in on running plays, etc...but in my mind that means your build has been shut down.

Again, I only opened my build as an example that seemed to not have all the problems I have continued to see posted on the TE forums boards. He didn't have problems w/ knocked loose, he was able to out-block most OTs, and he did it at a high level of competition. As a OC on a WL and Pro team I can tell you I'd prefer not to have the specialized TE after what I saw in season 12.

Tagging is a joke dude. Seriously... if you are lack creativity on offense and don't understand how to exploit a defense that tags your TE when he's in, then you have massive problems. Tagging is a team defense thing... it's not really a SHUTDOWN that guy thing. One-sided builds will continue to flourish. You just have to do what offenses in the NFL do. You either have your TE block occasionally, or you have him stay back on pass plays for protection.

This will typically cause most defensive players to slowly change their progressions and by the time they have the proper setup on defense... you've already succeeded or had a chance to. Tagging is for aggressive defenses and if you are overly aggressive one way you can get beat the other way. Specialized builds will always have a place on offense/defense... even more so now because of tagging.

That is fine, you can keep building your specialized TEs...for you there is nothing to see here.

For those who continue to ask, why can't my TE do "this" or "that", my guy is a example that could do it all. 90+ reception season, 80+ pancake season, 75% catch rate season....he ran the Drives and the Outs equally well.

I don't see your TE scaring anybody whatsoever. He isn't killing DE's run blocking. He's no passing threat.

I was the #1 TE 2 seasons in a row. Last season I was doing some hard-core blocking. Our OT would grab the DE and I'd use my high speed/agility to block LB's. Teams that tagged me for pass plays paid the price.

Hell, my TE played LB and got a TFL!!

almost got a sack here!

Aside from a bit of EQ in strength and two caps of blocking, there's not much difference between that TE and a well built receiving TE.

Your were #1 because your TE gets thrown too more than the WR's on your team. You have a drop ratio of over 18% and your strictly a rec TE. But you did almost get a sack.

I don't know dude. This isn't a flame or anything, but those stats don't look very impressive to me. He had one really good receiving season (90+ catches for a TE is quite good), but he didn't really have a lot of yards that season (800+ yards is still quite good, but not unusual for a TE). Season 9 and even Season 7 looked fairly productive, but seasons 6, 11, and 13 were awful thin. For the whole of his career, his production as a receiver has been on the low side, only 24.4 yards per game. That's not absolutely terrible, but I wouldn't recruit somebody with stats like that either. I just don't see a lot of production there.

On the blocking side, it looks about the same. Neglecting his first two seasons (when it is hard for a young TE to get pancakes), he had a career average of 35 pancakes a season. That's not terrible, but there are guys in CAN Pro with career averages of close to 100 pancakes per season. Their average is better than your best all time. I just don't see where there is a lot to brag about here.
