I know there's been some debate about the effectiveness of First Step for HBs, but I have to say I love it. I have a level 65 scat back who is already past 450 days, so he's near the end of his lifespan. He's a very good runner, receiver, and returner in a solid AAA league.
His speed according to the numbers is 105, and his agility is 78. He runs on about 65 elusive. That doesn't really compare to where a lot of speed backs are these days in terms of base stats, but I think that because I pushed First Step up to 10 I get an acceleration boost that most other backs don't. On the GLB Player Scout on Greasemonkey, I average around 33 speed, with my max acceleration being over 20. I don't get that acceleration boost running out of the Wildcat, which leads me to suspect that not only does First Step help as a HB, it's nearly essential.
I have no stat-boosting VAs; essentially, when my build was as fast as I wanted it to get I generalized my player's stats and focused on breaking tackles. I think that the current obsession with speed in the end costs too much and that the SPs would be more useful elsewhere.
