Hey guys, I figure we are all pretty big sports fans and who better to ask than sports fans. I am working for the Athletic Marketing department at UMass. Over the past 10 years, the basketball love has died down. We used to be a big time program including a final four appearance in the 90s when we were coached by some guy named Calipari. We are trying to renew our school's love in basketball and make our fan section as feared in Basketball as it is in Hockey.

Now I want your opinion, what promotions/gimmicks do you like seeing at Basketball Games?

Ideas can range from theme nights (we are running a Michael Jackson night at a hockey game next week) to a halftime contest etc. I will report back with the Coach's/AD's reply and provide pics if any actually happen. Thanks in Advance.

have like a 'black out night' where you give away free black t shirts to students for a big game or something.

We do Black Out night already for Basketball, then do White Out/Bright Out for Hockey.

Buck Night might be a cool idea. Students already get in free but a reduced concessions price might be nice because people have to save their money for beer and booze anyway

you need players like Dr. J and Marcus Camby!

no seriously though I think having a black out/white out is a good idea, but honestly, you can't get people to the game unless your team is good! Winning cures everything! Maybr try and schedule some bigtime programs as well, get a Duke, UNC, or Kansas on the schedule....it may be a 3 or 4 season contract and you may only get one home game but hey that's still one home game against the best!

Also you can't be lossing to Jacksonville St, or Univ of Wis Green Bay?

Yeah we need some better players but its been difficult losing Calipari to Memphis then losing Travis Ford to OkSt. Its hard to get good recruiting classes and stay in the same gameplan and system when your coach doesnt stick around. The new guy, Derek Kellogg is awesome and we had a really good recruitment for this year.

I expressed the same concern about the W/Ls to him last night at his house and he said "It's hard to deal with switching systems and getting the right guys for your system when your using another guys recruiting class. Now that I have one of my own things should be going back in the right direction" and as far as scheduling games against bigger opponents, we also talked about that last night. He said "It's really out of my hands, a lot of the big teams don't want to play an [Atlantic 10] team because they don't want a loss like that on their record. As the team gets better the competition will get better though." We already have Memphis on the schedule in Boston right before Christmas then have Xavier on campus in February. (We did beat Kansas last year though)

But Pajama night and the halfcourt shot would both be great idea.

SLZ we don't do a raffle but it could be a good idea. Just need to find the right prize and price for a ticket and then test to see what sort of response we get through a game or two.

For students, it could possibly go from a $50 gift certificate to one of the local restaurants up to an ipod. Depends on whether or not we can pull in a sponsor and if we can turn any profit on the raffle.

EDIT: I am sure my boss wouldn't mind doing a 50/50 sort of raffle either.

ya was thinking along the lines of a 50/50 raffle where the winner wins half of the pot. I don't know if people will come to the game just for a raffle though, but still it couldn't hurt....you'd never loose money on it either.

dollar beer night was a favorite of mine. Black outs/white outs are fun

Do the thing where you have two students do some stupid obstacle course. like where they spin around blind folded then they have to make a lay up and then they have to sprint back.

Dollar Beer night would be great but sadly the Arena doesnt serve any. Not exactly sure what the reason is. The Arena is Technically owned and operated by Global Spectrum, an arm of Comcast Spectacor (the people who own the 76ers). The concessions are through the school though and I think they want to avoid the possibility of it looking like the University is selling the students beer.

The students just smuggle in mixed drinks/come to the games drunk anyway...

And We do have a stupid obstacle course. We are thinking about making it stupider. Like 2 ridiculous costumes like sumo outfits and make them do it in that.

most college basketball games that I have been to do not serve beer at all, I know the Palestra doesn't and neither does the Wachovia Center for Villanova games
