They'll never be great if you do what everyone else has done.

My best and brightest HBs don't follow anything close to the general consensus on how to build a back. And they're not particularly similar to each other either.

Don't be afraid to get creative. Some attempts will fail, but the ones that suceed, they're the dots that make the biggest impact.

I just see a lot of advice in this subforum that leads to run of the mill players. Thought I'd say something.

The title suggests there is no solution to a mediocre halfback with Zero build plan.

Hmm.

run of the mill is still a whole lot better than what these a lot of these people could have hoped for before posting. i don't believe they can make a leap to experimenting without having some kind of experience with a baseline build

So true HULK...so true.

The best builds I know look like someone broke the cookie cutter when making them

:
Cap majors first. You want to be strong, as well as fast.
Train until at least 28 before distributing SP.
Intense > Normal.
Use normal for AEQ shopping. HBs require AEQ. They also require custom.

Order of tasks:
Evaluate your position. What's demanded of it? How do you believe that is best attainable?
Pick 3-6 SAs in accordance with that goal.
Pick 3 VAs that you believe compliment your SA choices.
Look over the attributes. Remember

You want to be strong, as well as fast.

Emphasize those elements and idealize a build on its way toward your SAs and VAs.
Begin with training.
Save SA investment until you're satisfied with your character's attribute total. You won't regret being most effective later in your career.

most people don't want to spend flex experimenting with a dozen players in order to get one worth keeping until level 50. for the most part the advice on these boards is the "minimum" in order to have any real success either at low levels or at high levels.

I've been quite tempted to try something a little different. Currently I'm creating a half back that when you look at his attributes he's an out and out elusive back. I'm got speed to the 4th cap, getting agility there, going for 55 carrying and 45 strength. But I'm thinking about when I get round to SAs going for all the power ones.

Couple this with Short Yardage Monster, Thick Skin (because of only possibly 45-50 confidence) and Slippery veteran abilities... I could have an interesting player.

But I'm totally unsure at the moment where to go with the SAs.... perhaps go for cover up only on the power side so he doesn't cough up and make him ultra elusive... not sure.

I'm trying something new next season (new to me anway)-
a strength, agility, carrying back with dive for yards pumped and a decent amount of vision

All builds have been done, you just don't know it so I can't be creative.

this

there's really nothing new to try for HBs

it's pretty clear what to raise if you want to break tackles with strength, break tackles with spin, avoid fumbles, outrun a defense, fake out defenders, get open on routes, reliably catch a pass, etc.

there's been HBs that try to specialize heavily in a few of the tasks and backs that try to do all of them.

the difference between good and mediocre is just how efficiently you raise the well-known attributes for the tasks you want

the bad HBs are the ones that try to use SAs and VAs that arent supported by their attributes

who knows, maybe a 70 jumping HB with 21 in Dive 4 Yds and 15 Tenacious would work
...until people scream exploit because getting tackled behind the LOS still yields a 2 yard gain every time :|

Disagree. I have a season 7 dot that had never been done before. And he's killing it. There are still ways to get creative imo.
