many people have told me that defending single back and sg with the same defensive formation is not a wise move because it can be exploited. no one has given me an explanation and the one person i thought may be able to is now banned.

since both have 3 wr it seems to me a nickle package 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 would be the way to go.

what defenses work best for you against SG (3wr) and which work best against Singleback?

Not many teams run out of the shotgun 3 WR, but teams have a lot of running options out of the SB formation. Out of the SB, you have several inside slams/dives, and pitches to the strong side and weak side. It's a tricky formation to defend.

You can run nickle and dimes against shotgun 3 WR, but against SB formations you almost need a 4 man front to defend the inside runs. Some people have success with a 3-3-5, some teams try a 3-4 with a FS on WR#3, and I've seen others try it with a 4/3 with the FS on WR#3 if they seem to run much more than they pass out of the formation.
