Anyone have any suggestions for preventing pancakes on a DE?

strength mainly, I think agility and speed also help them from getting a solid shot at you, stamina and confidence to keep your moral and energy up. But mainly strength.

Strength is most important but agility isn't too far behind. The idea behind that is you do a break block roll that relies primarily on agi and str. If you win that roll, you definitely won't get pancaked. However, if you lose that roll, then your str is what will save you from pancakes.

Cool. thanks, I will keep that in mind. I have been building my DE based on agility and speed, I will start working on strength, because pancakes annoy me

I actually think weight has more to do with pancakes than strength. But it's too late to change it once you have started.
I created a DT a few seasons ago, and went for 340 weight. He virtually never got pancaked even when slowbuilding him at level 1 going against level 13's. I started a new one this season, and went for the lightest DT I could get to try and get a better jump off the ball. He is getting caked all the time in the preseason and early season.
Last season I had a Center playing as a back-up with nearly even splits in plays. The guy ahead of me had virtually the exact same build, not one stat was more than about 7 different, and those that were, his guy had the lead in all fo them due to his 3 extra levels. His center was 302 weight, and was about 4th or 5th on the team in cakes. My center weighs 325 and was third in the leageu/1st in conference in cakes, and first on the team by a wide margin. I had more than twice as many as his guy.
My strength DE was playing last year at around 120 strength, but at that time everyone believed Bort that height and weight had a very minimal effect on players, so I settled for a 248 pound strength DE. He got caked more than any other DE on the team, despite having at least 30 more strength than any of them, and probably at least 10 more than any OT he faced all season.
But yeah, if its to try and help an established player, I think breaking the blocks is more important than any one attribute. Spend some points into shed block and find a piece of AEQ with break block % and it will do more good at stoping cakes than strength will in my experiences.

My 64 Agility DE has 11 in shed blocks / 75 strength and he's getting caked 5+ times per game in AAA
For VA i've got 15 in heavyweight - thought about throwing 15 into Never Give Up - but still haven't decided to do it.
Any other ideas on VA?
Thanks

I have a medium-heavy (277 lbs), under-strengthed (62) DE that gets pancaked regularly. He makes up for his weight with his lack of game speed. Agility 104 (78 natural). Speed 77.

With 64 agi/75 str you're not going to have many opportunities to use heavyweight because you're not going to be breaking all that many blocks.
