If you use it every game, any good DC can stop it. Now if you just pull it out once in a while its hard to stop.

Yea a good DC can stop it, but in doing so it prevents them from stacking the strong side of the line which can open up your running game.... Also, if they blitz the weakside QB that can create some matchups. It just creates lots of options.

Is there still a big penalty for using a non QB like say a HB at the QB position for these running plays?
There is a penalty but it can still work pretty well if the DC is not set up to stop it.
