Season 10 Pro World Tournament Championship Game
Gametime: Friday, July 24, 2009, 16:00.
Two of the most dominant Pro teams in GLB, the Cincinnati Shockers from USA Pro and the Marblehead Longhorns from the CPL, will square off on Friday afternoon for the Season 10 PWT title, the Pro World Tournament's Gold Trophy, and 5000 FLEX.
Cincy is playing the "golden boys" role this season - undefeated, everyone's choice for the top team in the game, poised to walk away with tons of hardware, sparkling smiles and all that - but they can't overlook the dangerous underdogs from Canada (...or Massachusetts, whatever.) Marblehead is regularly overshadowed by their louder conference-mates, were initially skipped over for a chance to rep CPL in the TOC, and were picked by no one in the bracket contest to win the PWT crown ... a very Dangerfield-esque Season 10 experience. In other words, Cincy is the rock star that could stage dive and surf above the adoring GLB community for hours without touching the floor and Marblehead is that one angry guy in the crowd with the weird smirk, the chem lab in his basement, and the hit list that has one name left to be scratched off.
In addition, these two come from regions that haven't particularly liked each other in the past, each team has done damage to the other's home league on the way to this title game. Marblehead has already taken out Honolulu, the Wolfpack, and Texas during their Season 10 PWT campaign while Cincinnati has beaten CPL's other three top dogs, Drygerian, Drinkin, and North Delta. More than a little league pride will be on the line when they hit the field.
As for this game's place in history, Marblehead becomes the first "B" seed and the first one-loss team to reach the Championship. Cincinnati follows in the footsteps of Monmouth, Lincoln, Honolulu, and Santiago and enters the game with a perfect 7-0 PWT mark. Both teams have 15 career PWT wins in three seasons, trailing only Monmouth and Honolulu (17) in that category. Cincinnati will be playing in Hazy's Championship soon and Marblehead just secured the TOC title, so this game will decide if either can take 2 of the 3 majors this season. And, looking ahead, it's very possible that they could end up as World league conference-mates next season.
