what abilitys should i work on to make my cb a better defender?

You should seriously consider retiring him and starting over. At level 42 a solid CB will be pushing 90+ speed, 65 Agility and Vision.
But the short answer would be, move all of your equipment into Speed. Then spend all your skill pt.s on Agility to 60 at least and then vision to 60 at least. Look for a piece of AE (Shutdown Coverage) and push it to 10.
Your CB will never be a Stud, but he can be much more enjoyable.

Actually, should be 100 speed, 70+ agility, 70+ vision and 1st capped tackling/jumping probably.
And a season 1 player should have way more than that at 42, due to all the extra training.
