I'm curious if it helps block passes when the DE gets close to the QB. Is it worth training at least?

It's worth training. It also helps you get sacks once you start raising jumping your sacks will increase, but just slightly. not even really noticeable. But it does help.

As UnderDogs said, jumping is more important for increasing sacks. Don't dump any SP into jumping, but definitely train it. The nice thing about jumping is that you can match it with lots of other important attributes while intense training.
