I am in the process of building a 3rd down back. Good at a bunch but not great at anything. My goals are:

Speed/Agility = 2nd Cap
Catching/Carrying/Vision/Blocking = 1st Cap

I am intending for him to be able to do a little spot running when needed but to also be able to pick up a blitzer(have a Spot Blitz AEQ) and catch passes out of the backfield.

My question is this: How much strength do I need to be an effective blocker as a HB when picking up DE's and LB's?

Also any other advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

Really, I don't seeany need to get blocking capped. Cap strenght on it's place and just train blocking to 30 maximum.

he wants to be able to block. are you saying strength is more important than blocking? why wouldn't he just train strength ...

I didn't said strenght is more important than blocking, but with good vision and blocking around the 30's it will be enough imo.

But if he caps both of them will be way better.

I also previously starting doing this but then I thought to myself, What is the point?

You're basically building a player destined to be nothing but average at everything.

Average at everything can be a big help to a team winning. If he makes one block on a LB or DE in pass protection that wins a game, or catches one pass that does the same then he is a success. To me everything is not always about personal success but team success.

Speed/Agility/Vision make the best blocking back. So building an elusive back with catching/vision is the best way to be a good 3rd down back. In fact as an ex-OC I love HB's that can catch. Makes it so much easier to run the ball and get big plays because they cant over-cover your running game and/or WR's.

Set the DC like this:
HB: Starter
HB2: Second string HB
HB2: FB

Set the FB to block in those situations. VIOLA!!! i do that for my team. it gets the backup FB some plays. Its a poor kid from taiwan and he doesn;t boost, but he has been on the team since season 1 and i just don't have the heart to cut him
