I have built my own FB for my RB's outside running. He is OK (better than most)... but he still tends to block too early. Is there a fix?? More VISION??? SUPER VISION???

Has anybody else had better luck with FB lead blocking on outside runs??

I will post his build...

One solution would be to plug him in at one of the TE spots and run him like a blocking TE.

I would say it's, at least partly, a problem with speed and agility

On this play, it looks likes he's making a move toward the SS but can't get there

Not sure what's happening here but there's no one for him to block immediately and the HB cuts inside

This one's a TD, lol, but he did the only blocking he could. By the time he was in position, the HB, who was so much faster, was five yards yards outside of him and cutting up the field.

I realize there may be a pathing issue where FBs don't go outside far enough that may be part of the problem, but on both of these plays, the FB turns up field as the HB passes him.

It's the TE, if he is not holding the blocks the FB will read it and respond. Likewise on alot of inside runs if the line isn't holding their blocks the FB or pulling Guard is going to end up picking up the slack and not getting downfeild. Speed/Agi might be more what you are looking for in the off hope that the FB clears the threat radius before the blocks by the TE are broken.

Thanks Juan. That makes sense.

Do you have a <70 speed FB blocking for a speed back? THAT'S the problem right there.

More vision can actually hurt when you start running into these situations imo. The issue is whether the blocks by your teammates are being held or not. Higher vision will increase the FBs awareness to this and he will react to threats that are further away from the play.

My basis for this is having both a NT and FB. My NT is sitting on high breakthrough and %to break block, so while he doesn't technically break through all the time, he is frequently disengaging from his blockers. This can lead to FBs and TEs triple teaming him as they view him as the closest threat on the field. I saw in couple cases last season where a FB peeled away from a sweep route to block my NT.

On the other hand, FB blocking has always been kinda screwy. You really see it the most when the RB outclasses the Spd/Agi of the FB though. FBs DO NOT block based on the location of the HB, they block based on their own location and the threats they see around them.
