So I'm thinking of creating a player that dominates against special teams returns. I'm thinking speed, tackling, some agility, maybe vision, maybe strength. Would that be right? What position would be good for making a special teamer?

Also, is it worth it? Sacrificing catching/jumping/stamina/confidence, pretty much his entire pass offense/defense to boost return stuffer attributes, would he be that much better on special teams?

Keep in mind that I'm as green as...maybe last Tuesday.

moot point, mainly because a good build at SS/CB/LB/DE position is going to be good on STs as well.

Only way to really "specialize" in ST is to put your VA points in to "special teamer."

Aiming for ST your only real sacrifice will be that you'll need to get your stamina a bit higher than other players, STs will wear a dude out.

I would say SS would be best and to max out closing speed.

Im not sure if it is really worth it though.

Noted. I guess if a team doesn't need depth at SS and is looking for an edge on special teams, a guy like what I'm thinking of might have a home. But you guys are right, he probably wouldn't be much better on special teams than a normal, well-built safety, and he most likely would have more options that way as well.

He's done alright. Check out his Awards case =p PM me if you want details of his build because I'll lose track of this thread.

I would focus on making a big hitter. Many return men have below average carrying, unless they are also a running back, and you can really force a lot of fumbles from them if you have the correct build.

against st's... super fail

against sts all you need is speed and a decent amount of tackling. nothing real special there. although with these changes a decent amount of str would help because the str/fumble changes are retarded this season.

A few ideas that come to mind:

-----------

Special teams tackler:

68 speed + all equip
60 strength
60 tackling <- these two to force the fumbles
60 agility <- to not incur the 2/3 rule and miss out on all that speed

Making the best position DE, as they get 0.5 in all of those.

Scratch jumping, vision, confidence, stamina, you name it. Get down field fast, and whallop the guy, that is all that matters. Focus on force fumble or special teamer VAs/SAs.

Another viable option would be to use a DT, and get big hit up.

---

Special teams blocker:

Strength 68 + all equip
Blocking 60
Agility 60
Speed 60
Vision 48

go nuts on pancakes. the agility/speed/vision are just to get to your next pancake. Best position is C if you want nuts strength, or OT if you want the agility and vision gains as well I dunno.

---

Special teams returner:

73 speed + equip
68 agility
48 vision
48 carrying

go nuts on the quick cut SA, anything to weave through the pack, hit the holes and take off running

skip confidence, stamina, strength, jumping, all that jazz.

------------------

All of these builds will be successful FAR earlier than using a position player would.

I turned my NT into a ST ace and I would say it's worked pretty well.

So far this season (Including Preseason games) he has 13 tackles and he has had a forced fumble in every game with 3 ff in one of those games. So in 5 games he has 13 tackles and 7 FFs...and he only plays on STs.

What kind of speed does he have?

Sorry, I'm not giving out his build. But he is the fastest DT on my team

I've got a CB that is a specialized special teamer and he's been great. A ton of speed and agility and some vision. His lack of tackling hasn't hindered him too much. Some strength would be good to break any blocks that you don't run around.

you should have no problem finding a team willing to roster players to play special teams only...special teams absolutely kills energy so it is great to have a deep enough bench to roster special teamers...just very hard to find people willing to sacrifice players to special teams...typically it is a player that someone has given up on and is thinking of retiring but plays special teams for a season or two...

the special teams VA is powerful...but most players will not use it because they also play offense/defense...so I think it would be a good differentiator...

personally I think a well built DT...high agility/speed/strength/tackling with the addition of focusing on blocking can be a force on special teams...and the blocking allows him to be a force on both KRS and KOS. DTs are nice because they get great level bonuses in the major stats...

even a regularly built guard or center with a bit of focus on tackling could do both roles very effectively...

I have also seen CB returners...return punts/kicks and then play on KOS as a defender...

We did that. We have our bottom CB specialize in Kick return and use him as a KOS to make sure he gets enough XP. Keeps the starters fresh, and gives us decent special teams output.
