How effective are the really high strength DTs?

Its hard to say because the DTs and DEs performance has been hindered this season. I haven't noticed a lot of difference among the different builds on the two teams my two DTs played on.
Because of the auto points you get each level up, I do recommend that you build up strength and agility to the second cap if not the third cap before worrying about speed. You can always shift your equipment around. If the code eventually works right having high strength and agility should never hurt your performance, it should only enhance it.

I think you'd be good at taking up blockers but not great at getting into the backfield.

I'm slowbuilding a DT, and got a 21-17 strength-agility roll. I plan on third capping both as soon as possible, but I'm thinking about going with an all out strength focus, with all equipment on strength. I did the math, but I forget the numbers now, lol. I'm pretty sure I came up with something like 100 strength by level 24, but before I start on this, I want to make sure the end will be worth the journey.

I wish I had a good answer, lol. I guess I'm looking for a run stuffer, but it'd be cool if he could get some pressure on QBs. The bottom line I think is that I want a guy that can break blocks, and with the new O Line builds that focus less on strength, I'm wondering if I'd be able to achieve that with dominant strength, or if he'd just get clogged up at the line.

I believe if you're going with High STR then you should focus on the NT and put 9 PTs into D-line general and just be a HUGE body that just sucks up blocks. There's not much glory in it but everyone else will be extremely grateful, especially a good owner.

100+ strength
75+ agility NT
i had my best season ever this season, granted our league was a little weaker this year and our defense ranked number 1 in every category.
had 64tckls, 30 for loss, 24 hurries, 2 sacks, and a safety.
i was very impressed considering i've built him to mainly just eat up blockers in the middle

They can be very effective at NT. They can also be effective at DT, but probably not as high value as the agility builds.

curious what your speed is. I looked at your team stats, and you are not too far behind the rest of your line in hurries, but you are way back in sacks. I have two theories.
1. You are getting those hurries when the QB steps up in the pocket....essentially he comes closer to you and the game counts it as a hurry. I have seen this happen with my lvl 10 DT who was playing as a backup in a league where everyone was 20 lvls higher than him.
2. You are getting through the line and getting pressure on the QB, but are not quite fast enough to finish him off.
Do you know which is happening? I realize your job is to eat up blockers and stuff the run, but It would be great to be able to put the QB on his ass too.

Here's a good way to test it. Setup a scrim vs another team that you know. Ask the LG to put all +gear on agility or something (or simply take off all gear). Get your 100+ str DT to go against him. Watch your DT get 0 pressure.
That should save you some time.

you can't get a sack if you aren't near the qb, hit strength/agility all you want but if you want a sack get speed to at least 60. You can steal points from vision/confidence/stamina.

I build my DT to be a power pass rusher (Strength + Strong Base) rather than the normal agility with shed blocks build. Heavyweight helped, but I think the difference is when you knock the guard over, it takes longer to get up to speed and reach the QB in comparison with using shed blocks and swim moves.
Its always worth a shot- I built my guy because I didn't want to be like every agility based DT out there, and he does a good job on run defense.

umm, he breaks thru quite frequently against weaker opponents, not so much against same level C's and G's. Our RDE is pretty amazing so I have a feeling quite a few of those hurries could've been caused by him forcing the qb to step up in the pocket.
regardless, his high strength does seem to be allowing him to push his blocker back a yard or so a play, thus collapsing the pocket a little bit, ala jamal williams, a lot of the time

I put strength over 100 and this saison and get 2 interceptions ;-)
100+ strength
75+ agility ratio is good.
