The CPU has started making my kicker take field goal attempts from ridiculously long distances of 60+ yards. I'd like to cut that down to about 53. How do I set the max field goal range to a reasonable value? The wording is a little bit confusing in the AI. Would 53 be 36 + 17 and therefore 36 in the box?

set mine to 54 cause i was having the same issue of kickers kicking from beyond 60 and missing most of them.
haven't had one over 54 attempted since.

The max FG range option in the AI has nothing to do with the length of FGs your kicker attempts. The only use of that field is to give the "Within FG Range" and "Outside FG Range" type of options a baseline with which to base the output.
If you don't want to kick a FG longer than 53 yards, create some inputs to handle it.
4th down, 0-1 yards to go, OPP GL to OPP 40 = HB inside
4th down, 1-99 yards to go, OPP GL to OPP 40, Within FG Range = FG
4th down, 1-99 yards to go, OPP GL to OPP 40, Outside FG Range = Punt

I can absolutely guarantee that it's true, well, unless Bort changed it without an announcement.
We had my kicker attempting 60 yard field goals, until we changed the AI to punt in that situation. Before that point, I was under the impression that the FG range field would force a punt, but it definitely was not.
Edit: At the time, 47 was set as the "Max FG Range".
