I'm building a new CB, and I'm thinking about making catching/jumping/vision my primary attributes, with speed and agility secondary (but still look to get these to at least the second cap at some point, and put all equipment on speed).

Has anyone tried this, or anyone have any ideas/opinions about it? Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

Bort said something about CBs getting the first roll on a pass, which makes me think that WR style catching could pay off.

I'm not sure how the math would work out--how are you going to get catching, etc . . . up high enough for it to be a unique build while also second capping speed and agility?

I haven't really done the math, speed/agility might not get there until the 30s. I'd be softcapping catching/jumping/vision first, and work them up to the second cap while I trained speed/agility. After I hit 2nd caps on all 3, I'd probably softcap speed/agility, then go back and 3rd cap vision, and maybe jumping. I think 60 catching would be enough.

I don't have a definitive build plan yet, just a thought. But very few CBs have catching/jumping over 50, and its a minority that have vision at the 3rd cap, so I'd like to see how it works out.

If you do that try to find a team that runs a zone defense. You'd be like DeAngelo Hall.

I thought Hall sucked in zone coverage.

he wont be able to go 1 on 1 with wrs without speed and agility, since ever reciever is speedy gonzalez now so make sure he is playing ZONE ONLY. as for the cb getting the first roll yes that is true but if ur not close enough to the wr for it to trigger the roll catching is irrelavent

I did four different builds as a test, one being focused on speed/agility, one on vision/jumping/swat ball, one with jumping/catching/sticky hands, one on vision/super vision.

Conclution: Speed/agility worked the best, and even got more PD/ints than the others.

However, I only did the test to about level 20, then I narrowed them down to a similar build.

I know what you're saying about man to man, but if I played loose/aggressive coverage with like 80+ speed, 60+ jumping and catching, and 68+ vision, I would think I'd be able to make some plays. The only thing I'd be worried about are those straight deep routes, where a speed guy would just fly right by, but thats why you have safeties, lol.

This is kind of a stupid pondering, but what if you put all equipment into jumping and had it 90-100? How high do you think a player like that would be able to jump? High enough to shoot up in the air and just grab any ball in his direction, or what?

Another thought is to just slowbuild an exact speed WR build on a CB, basically neglecting tackling and strength, and work catching up to 60+, so it would basically be like 2 WRs going for a pass, but my guy gets the first roll. I think thats the basic build right now anyways, minus high catching, which seems to be a stat that gets neglected by most corners.

You're mistaken he sucks in man. or I am mistaken and the raiders play zone, and it was the falcons that played man.
IM pretty sure the falcons played zone and the raiders play man though. which is why he sucked when he went to the raiders.

your forgetting agility, w.o that high enough, wr's will be able to run post and underneath routes against your cb , will go right by ur cb(agility is now linked to acceleration)... even tho you will have what is takes to get the int, you wont be able to change speeds and direction fast enough, so u wont give up the big play by playing loose but u will get ALOT of tackles because you will be stopping wr's after they make the catch i.o making sure wr's dont make the catch in the first place ... which is what a cb is for

the qb doesnt throw the ball to the cb, which is why the cb gets the first roll, when the roll happens its basically your cb abilities minus the wr abilites

speed and agility get u in a postion to challenege for the ball, if u dont have those to keep up with the wr, all the vision/jumping/catching will be useless
as for getting ints while playing loose coverage ... good luck with that lol, ur lack of agility will make it impossible to close fast enough on the ball to get the int

and you're forgetting it doesn't matter. Most wide receivers will catch the ball with 2 corners, a safety. and a O.L.B. on him or in his vicinity. please explain this oh great one.

Unless Doc Brown let you sit shotgun in the Delorian, I don't see how you can claim that success with this build would be impossible. I know what you're saying, and I agree to an extent, but this all just kind of experimental to see what else is out there. I dont think that anyone could say definitively that this build wouldnt work and claim that the most popular CB build is the best way to go, because no one that I have seen has taken this route all the way through. Instead, almost everyone out there just restates what everyone else considers to be a good build without any real data from the other side to back it up.

I have another CB with the "normal" build, and he's relatively productive, but just because he and many others like him have had decent careers, and everyone and their mom has been building CBs the same way since season 1 so that they all look exactly the same, doesnt necessarily mean its the best possible way to do it.

I'm willing to bet that 3 seasons ago, if Rod Long was out here talking about making a LB with a focus on speed, agility and vision, he would have been met with mostly naysayers, and told that he wont have the strength to break through or the tackling to stop the run, that it would be "impossible" to get sacks, but look at LBs now.

I'm not saying this build is going to work, or that Im some visionary. Im just curious, and odds are that this will end in miserable failure. But I think that, possibly, this might end up better than the norm. And if not, I'll probably just try something else.
