Assuming you build two exactly identical HBs with the following beginning stats:
Str: 18 Blk: 10
Spd: 13 Tck: 8
Agi: 14 Thr: 10
Jum: 10 Cat: 10
Sta: 10 Car: 10
Vis: 10 Kck: 8
Con: 10 Pun: 8
And they both don't play any games their first season, and then join a D-league or somesuch for their following seasons until 13 (as is the traditional model for slow building, don't ask me why); if the first HB spends his SP as soon as the first cap is reachable and the second HB spends his SP when 4:1 is reachable, the following will occur:
HB#1
Season 1 final results: Str: 52.99 (81% trained), Spd: 16.99(30%), Agi: 17.99(16%), Car: 17.99(60%)
(Trains str/car intense; soft caps str by the end of level 3 to maximize training gains until the last day and then maximize automatic level gains; then switched to intense spd/agi as a poster suggested above)
Season 2 final results: Str: 70.63(81%) Spd: 25.63(43%) Agi: 26.63(11%) Car: 20.63(60%)
(All points are placed into strength, player is level 12 by the end of the season with 202 xp)

(It's day 12 into the season, the very end of level 13 - either a game or day of xp would level the player, and str is 4:1 capped, of note is that speed and agility are both near 30, an opportune place to stop training them and begin saving up for a cap)

(All points are saved, str/carry is intense trained; this is only a test, some might alternate carry and jumping with str, doesn't make a big difference in the example)

(Same exact day as HB#1 [very end of Lvl.13], simply because it's wisest to wait until the last possible day of a level to distribute points if you're going to train a skill)
So as a direct comparison of results, HB#1 (who capped asap) has the same strength as HB#2; He has 12 more speed; He has 12 more agility; He has 9.96 less carrying. HB#2 has 4 unspent SP.
These results are fairly exact, and as much as they need to be for a study of this nature.

The models/processes for each player were exactly the same, so the results are accurate within reason. The builder doesn't consider training bonuses as far as I know, so it could be different depending on luck, though nothing to make up a bunch of SP I think.
The question is whether you'd rather have this:
