I recently retired my possession WR, and began to slow build a speedster. My goal was to get 5:1 speed, 4:1 agility, 2:1 catching. From what I am hearing, is seems like perhaps speed builds aren't what they used to be. Is this still a good plan? I have 45 points burning a hole in my pocket.

One game this season aside, my speed WR should be fine. It's just that catching is more important than it used to be (which was the root of my WRs issues early on). It also seems like QB strength needs to be higher than it used to, but overall I'd still say that speed WRs are still very good. I might consider going to the 4th cap in speed instead and getting catching to the 3rd cap, though.

Seems like good advice. Thanks.

My speed WR went from stud to dud with the changes this season. He's pretty worthless right now, I'd stick to balanced builds for a base and once you hit 40 if you want a speedster take speed instead of SAs.
The QB/ WR passing dynamic has destroyed my speed guy, can't speak for others. On the few occasions when I get behind the secondary I have to stop to catch the ball which means I'm tackled the moment I catch it, break away TDs which were my staple are non-existent for me this season. I also see way more balls completely off target, that I don't even have a chance to catch on the plus side I have yet to drop a ball in 5 or 6 games despite averaging two a game for the previous few seasons (that right there tells you some mechanic was changed).

So, you would say, go 68/68/68 speed/agility/catching, then build from there?

I think that sets you up for the best long term success as those are the three most important attributes and you can choose which direction to go from there while training up the others. With enough people clamoring that attributes over 100 are worthless and constant changes to game mechanics, this gives a nice solid build- you have enough agility to fake and accelerate, decent speed that can be increased into the 90s with EQ and enough catching to catch deep balls or go possession.
This of course changes from season to season. I would have said that 60 catching and 48 agility were fine last season, but this season the deep balls got harder to catch (and throw) and Creative Route Run makes higher agility more important.

speed guys still work once in awhile this season...

I think high speed is still the most important base stat for any receiver. Just may take an extra season or two before you are balanced enough to be solid in all aspects.

Yeah, speed still works. I think Bort inadvertently made agility more important than it used to be this season as well, so it's darn near impossible to go straight speed now.
The fastest WRs will frequently beat their man by a few steps 20+ yards downfield. Depending on the QB, but from what I'm seeing, about once in 10-15, the QB will hit him in stride for a home run. Most of the time, the ball is underthrown, so the WR will have to beat the CB back to catch it, which is where the agility comes in. Most of the WRs are immediately tackled if they make the catch.

Yeah, balls being underthrown is the thing I'm noticing too, though. It's really destroying YAC on long throws.

I guess my biggest concern with more of a balanced build is the old "Jack of all trades, master of none". What if I went 4:1 agility, 3:1 speed and catching?

It's best to make a balanced build and be able to swing it around to suit the sim with equipment.
So i'd suggest not going to the 4th cap on anything. Get some speed, get some agility, have good catching, then try to just get everything else to the 1st soft cap.

68x3 build is a master of speed, agility and catching-the three things you need to get open and catch. You can become an expert in one of three paths once you get there-> Speed guy, Agility guy or Possession guy.
A build with 48 in each minor and major attribute would qualify as a jack of all trades master of none build.

Well, that's what I'm going with. We'll see how it works. Thanks.
