Season 7 kicked off with the out of conference games and there were a few surprises, most notably the Freebirds easily taking care of DDL and the high powered Coyote attack edging the Fire.
West
1. Monmouth Evil Monkeys 1-0 - Rhode Island at least made it a game for 1 quarter as they actually led 6-3 at that point. It was business as usual after that for Monmouth, however, as they reeled off 30 straight points to put the game away before winning 46-13. The Evil Monkey D was impressive as always, holding Rhode Island to 182.5 yards and sacking their QB 14 times including 9 from DT Merlin Olsen. Monmouth's next game should be their toughest of the season. Not.
Up next: at the 0-1 Anchorage Penguins
2. Honolulu Hurricane Warriors 1-0 - this just in. Honolulu can run the ball. Nerf to the running game or not, that didn't stop HHW from putting up 426 yards on 52 carries, including 241 from Clinton Wang, as Honolulu rolled to a 112-16 victory. Lest you think the Warriors can't pass, Stuart Wang was a super efficient 16 of 17 for 304.5 yards and 7 TD's. Their next opponent will be a bit tougher, but it's still a game that they should win.
Up next: at the 0-1 Dallas Orangebloods
3. Parma Burglars 1-0 - Parma introduced themselves to USA Pro in convincing fashion by easily toppling one of the East's stronger teams, the Philadelphia Pushovers, 34-10. DT Dan Dakota led the way for Parma with 9 sacks (I smell a DT nerf coming in the off season) as Parma held Philadelphia to a measly 127 yards. Parma gets to play tiddly winks with the Vaqueoros next. Can you say 2-0?
Up next: at home against the 0-1 Dallas Vaqueros
4. Las Vegas Freebirds 1-0 - in what was probably the most impressive victory of the week, the Freebirds rallied from a 24-23 deficit with 21 4th quarter points to win going away 44-24. Alfonso Sargenti sealed the deal with a 74 yard pick six with a minute left in the game. QB Joestev Youngtana led the Freebird offense with 246 yards passing and 3 TD's.
Up next: at the 0-1 Columbus Bucks
5. San Francisco Fire 0-1 - in another surprising game, the Fire didn't have an answer for the high powered Kalamazoo offensive attack as they gave up 518 yards of offense. The offense kept the team in the game and an interesting call to kick a FG while down by 5 with :38 left in the game could have cost them the game. San Francisco will try to rebound against Lincoln next.
Up next: at the 1-0 Lincoln Navigators
Others considered: Minnesota Marauders 1-0, Lincoln Navigators 1-0, Bourbon Street Bullies 1-0
East
1. Cincinnati Shockers 1-0 - Cincy went to the air 51 times for 312 yards as they outlasted the Dallas Orangebloods 38-24. Dallas had closed the gap to 31-24 with five minutes remaining but it took only 11 seconds for QB John Young to hook up with (the irony of this name amuses me) Jacob Orangeblood on a 60 yard TD pass to put the game away.
Up next: at the 0-1 Rhode Island Red Wolves
2. Green Bay Maulers 1-0 - defense, defense, and more defense was the key to the Maulers crushing 41-0 victory over the Daggers as they held Kaneohe to 103.5 yards of total offense while putting up 435 of their own. TE All Hands led the way on offense with 9 receptions for 96 yards and a score. A much tougher test awaits the Maulers D this week as they now take on the Coyotes.
Up next: at the 1-0 #5 Kalamazoo Coyotes
3. Detroit Demon Lions 0-1 - to be fair to DDL, the game was a lot closer than the score indicated as they outgained Las Vegas. 3 interceptions, including one returned for a TD, were huge though and DDL's stay at the top was oh so short lived. They now get to take on the #4 OFG's in a game that will likely have a lot of late season implications.
Up next: at home against the #4 1-0 OFG's
4. ***Official*** Footballguys 1-0 - it wasn't pretty, but the OFG's won their first USA Pro game 41-22 by putting up 21 points in the 4th quarter. Nearly 500 yards of offense was the key including a 61 yard TD run by Loto Doluca in which 6 tackles were missed. A bigger test is in store this week as the OFG's take on a DDL team that will be looking to knock some heads after their opening week loss.
Up next: at the #3 0-1 Detroit Demon Lions
5. Kalamazoo Coyotes 1-0 - jumping quickly into the Hazy 10 is the Coyotes after their very impressive victory over the Fire. My pre-season concerns about their defense seem well founded as they gave up over 400 yards to the Fire, but who cares when you can put up 500+ of your own. This team is going to put up some points on you... that much is for sure. We'll see if they can keep up with Green Bay this week though.
Up next: at home against the #2 1-0 Green Bay Maulers
