American Made Belgian Beers are awesome - See New Belgian Brewery, Ft Collins, CO... They make an aged Sour Brown, 'La Folie' that's an amazing beer. Aged for three years in old, oak wine casks they bought from a winery in California. Sublime.
And their more traditional Belgian brews are top notch as well.
Top it all off they are an employee run company, great corporate behaviour. They recently voted to forego raises and bonuses one year and shifted the facility to wind power. They are also very linked in with the local Ag University and are re-using waste products from the brewing process to sponsor fish farming and other nifty things. They buy all their employees a 'fat tire' bicycle after they've been with the company a year and after five years they send them on a two week vacation to Belgium for a bike/beer tour.
I think maybe he just likes the darker beers. Some folks do. I love a good stout.
Belgian beers are great but honestly I would classify them as a little effeminate. Look where they are from.. Belgium.. what are they known for? Being run over by the Germans and chocolate and not having their own language I guess.
So their beers are tasty, but a litle lacking in the manliness dept.
