are you sure you want to play cover 3?

cover 3 is basically a prevent defense so teams would likely be able to complete the underneath routes on you all day

Depending on the formation and down/distance you're facing though, you can use Cover 3 with man under and have enough CBs to still man up and leave 3 guys free playing zones..

Say the offense is facing 3rd and 10 and comes out with a 2 WR look.. Odds are they're going to try a long pass.. You could put in a 3-2-6 dime package using Cover 3 man under and no blitzers.. Your CB1, CB2 and FS will drop back in a zone and CB3 and CB4 will man up on the WRs.. Then you've still got the 2 LBs and SS to cover the backs and TE.. Just a thought.. You'd have man coverage on the WRs and guys sitting in a zone watching the QB..

But yeah, for the most part, Cover 3 can be like a prevent defense.. Less so than Cover 4, though..

BTW, I missed the 3-4/4-3 references in the title..

Here is a cover 3 vs a 2 WR set.

Cover 3 from a 4-3 or 3-4 is garbage.

Zone schemes are still "wonky" and that's being polite. Putting CB's into deep zones makes no sense to me. I have yet to consider Cover 3.
