That's actually really common in the northern areas of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. The reason being that a lot of families up there live off venison for most of the winter. I know in most of those areas the schools just call a conference day or something because attendance would be so bad on the opening day of deer season.

Minnesota's season always starts on the weekend. If the school closes at all during the season it probally is to keep the children from getting shot at the bus stop in their brown coat.
People don't even go to their mail box without at least putting on a blaze orange hat. Else you get shot at.
