I've been looking through the forums lately and seeing everyone panicked about the supposed "nerf" of speed DEs. It got me thinking about building a DE with tons of strength just to see how he would do against some of the OTs out there. Has anyone had success with this before?

I started this guy way back when my strength DT was good, and I wanted to get access to First Step to go along with it.

Haven't actually invested in First step, but that is only because he is so absolutely horrible that it wouldn't make a bit of difference.
He didn't do anything in scrimage #1, but I only glanced at the pbp really quick, and it looked like he was outleveled by 7 levels, so may not be completely accurate. Although on the other hand, my OT has him outleveled by 16 levels AND is strength based, and still only has a slight advantage in strength.
Bottom line is strength hasn't made a difference for defenders since season 3, and it looks like now it will only start to matter in a negative way if your strength is low.

More balanced builds will prosper imo

I keep hearing people say that, but my question is how? If super high strength isn't enough to beat an OT, and super high speed isn't able to beat them, then how will having mediocre of both beat them? I think it will make the super high agility guys way better, this season, and really hurt the speed guys, while keeping the strength guys sucking.
And from what I saw last season, the super high agility guys were the ones who needed the help the least. Just ask David Amazing what he thinks about that.

Well shite - it would be nice to be able to build a powerhouse DE who just dominated OTs that were lower on strength. Maybe I'll still give it a try.

Try putting a DT in the DE spot, you'll see what happens...

Little to nothing against the pass, some decent run stopping, I assume. Its hard to be stronger than an offensive lineman, since strength tends to be their main focus, with some blocking and maybe capped agility. This build would need top end strength, high agility, and enough speed to actually get to the QB, before you even start considering vision, confidence, and a few points in stamina & tackling.
Now, a high strength DE vs a low level OT might work, but with similar levels, its useless.

I've seen what OTs are trying to do lately - they're ignoring strength to put an emphasis on blocking and agility. To me, a DE that pumps strength up to a really high level could fare really well.
Many of the "speed rushers" get speed and agility to 70+ while leaving strength around the soft cap. Why not go heavy on strength, then agility or speed, then bring the remaining one around the 1st soft cap?

thought a ton of early SA's, he seems salvagable to me with that high STR...... could be a real asset if used properly

He'll be fine....just needs about 40 more points of Agi and 30 more points of speed...let us know how it works out in 20 or so levels
