Just curious how many inputs other DCs have in their gameplan? Last season I had 27 Inputs. This season I am up to 55.

I am by no means a master at this, I am actually still learning but I am obsessed with creating a dominant defense. Now I just need the players to get it done.

17 inputs last season. I suspect I might have around 50 for season 6, but I haven't really gotten into the nuts and bolts of retooling it yet.

59 defensive inputs and counting... not including 4th quarter situational stuff. Ugh.

Okay, at least I am not going overboard, well, at least I am not the only one going overboard.

Follow up question - how effective do you think your D was last year?

I think my game plans were decent, not great, but there are so many variables left to cover. Some of this has to do with the type of players you have.

17 inputs worked well for me last season, designed by formation. We were giving up a little less than 8 ppg. Season 6 I'm basing inputs on down/distance/formation/field position. Did some quick math and looks like I'll have around 60-65 inputs but I might pare that down a bit. I don't want to out-think myself.lol Against a few formations, I won't change much (weak I, shotgun 3WR, shotgun 5WR).

Yea, started with about 15-18. Now I have no idea as I'm don't want to go overboard so it kinda in the air.

Wouldn't this create a very large playbook????
1st and 10 input - 2wr, 50% run/50% pass
1st and 10 input - 3wr, 50% run/50% pass
1st and 10 input - 5wr, 50% run/50% pass
etc..
THEN
1st and 5 input - 2wr, 50% run/50% pass
1st and 5 input - 3wr, 50% run/50% pass
1st and 5 input - 5wr, 50% run/50% pass
etc..

7 inputs, and it performed just fine.

Some people go overboard with the defensive AI. Don't let them influence you. Especially with the new offensive tactics around the corner.

Someone just asked me yesterday and I counted 31, I think, for Season 5.

However, now that I have more time, I may expand.

Do most of them end up with the same or very similar outputs?

Like if you scout a team and realize they are fairly balanced, 50/50 run/pass with no tricks. Do you end up having mostly the same outputs in all of your inputs?

Before the plays expanded, I keyed in on formations.

For instance, Strong 'I' had 2 pass and 1 run. If it was 3rd-and-2, I keyed on the run. If it was 3rd-and-8 and I had a 24-point lead, I'd send the house in a pass rush.

If I were to guess, I'd say I had 15-20 unique plays in my 100+ outputs.

All that has changed now.

I hadn't been involved enough to key in on the differences between formations before. Now with the new offensive AI, my interest has suddenly picked up.

Luckily, I don't think I'll need to change much, because it seems like the best solution (at least initially) will be to play fairly balanced to see what these new playbooks are capable of.

89 inputs. Maybe overkill, but specifically selects by down, pass or run (guess by yard) and formation, plus a few other inputs.

I think a dozen or so is all you need, and you can get by with even less. Many are redundant - a single 5 WRs input is applicable to any down and just about anyplace on the field and most score situations, for example.

Really, defensive gameplanning is getting the dots properly configured for the offensive situation and what you know about the opponent's strengths/tendencies - and then getting the dots headed in a productive direction at the snap.

Nothing more, nothing less.

The rest is all about builds, energy and depth chart.

Nuked last season's playbook of mid-30's or so inputs.

New one is up to about 19.

That'll be added to after a scrimmage or two, for sure. But I don't know how much will be added.

And last season, our team was 14-2 and it was our D that got us there. I hope we can carry at least some of that over into the new season after getting moved up. o.O

Everyone seemed to wonder about how to stop that Strong 'I' off-tackle. I [and by "I" of course, I mean "as the D-Co" ...] held the #1 Rushing Offense in our League to 40 yards on 20 carries [the game ended with them having negative yardage due to 11 Sacks] in the Championship Game. Things have now greatly changed.

I really haven't revamped "the book" as I still have some open roster spots on 3 different teams.
