Here's a general question since I'm planning ahead for next season: the way I see it, there are two basic ways to create pressure against 3 WRs apart from the DEs. You either have a very good pass rushing DT that comes from the inside or a very fast ROLB that you blitz with a weak side shift.

My question now is, with which did you have better results and how should you build a player to succeed with the scheme?

We had a good amount of success with a fast agile ROLB.

Against the 3 wr shotgun, we'd line up in a 3-3-5 weak shift cover 2 m2m and blitz the rolb and MLB. Because my rde was trying to get to the outside against the ot, it would open up a hole for either of the blitzing lbs.

To be effective, you need SPEED and AGILITY, probably some VISION, too.

Id say 98% of competitive teams had this same play. It is cheap and should be fixed for next season.

Very effective play, probably too effective. Got a lot of sacks and TFLs out of it.

I agree and I agree.
It worked just fine for us, both of the blitz formations, and they will likely be fixed after this season. I know they are changing some stuff for OTs and such so that could do it as well.

The only fix needed is to put run and short pass plays into shotgun. Bringing more blitzers than they have blockers isn't an exploit, it's common sense D if you're certain they're going to be throwing long. That's how most teams play 3rd and 15 in the real world, after all.

I'm rushing 3 guys on the weak side which only has two guys blocking. How will this be fixed?

I won't go into the fact that my lbs are probably 4x more fast and agile as opposing OLinemen.

Send in the SS to occupy the RG and what's left?

Its 6 on 5 ... someone needs to get through.

I don't get the "should be fixed for next season" mentality.

I will use this thread. What have the successful Offensive Coordinators used to counter the 3-3-5 weakside ROLB/MLB blitz?

High VISION, SPEED and AGILITY RG's can get over to cover the blitz. That's why I use the SS up on the line in a Cover 1.

So you send MLB/ROLB/SS? All three?

Sure.

If you don't get to the QB, you're hard pressed to not give up a big play.

Also, I don't always use the 3. I run variations.

Also, live by the blitz, die by the blitz.

True. Just interesting. I typically only send 2. But I will look at some of your tape and see how you do when you send 3. Thanks for the response.
