... so why is he trying to get to Europe?

Seriously, he's 30 friggin' yards down field. He is set to read the pass, too. I understand he's the last line of defense in a Cover 1, but this is terrible.

And, yes, this was/is an experimental play, double-covering 3 of the 4 down field receivers.

This is what a FS does.

Look what he does in the next play:
He reads well that both WR and TE are cover one on one and are about to lose their defender. He stays deep enough to be able to go to either route. When pass is made he closes quickly and is there for the tackle (if needed).

This play was the same philosophy but he could not decide between the two WR and remain in position to tackle them both if necessary. Not a bad job at all. Good job by Bort on that one.

In the play shown, though, there is double-coverage on 3 of the 4 receivers. Why is he not closer to the one running deep? He is 30 yards off the line of scrimmage and totally ineffective.

Twist: If I ran this as a Cover 1 "man-to-man," would the FS double-cover the last of the 4 receivers?

Cover one would mean the FS is the zone over the top and the SS would be playing man or doubling someone. If you want the FS to play man or double someone you would need to play cover 0.

I was wondering if he would pick-up the only non-doubled receiver or would he lock on to WR1. Also, if he did lock onto WR1, would the CB's bump down the line to fully get everyone doubled?

The FS did not had a clear decision which to take. The single covered was covered above, while the double cover was doubled covered below.
If he went to the single cover and the double covered WR was get deep it is a TD.
If he went to the double cover and the single covered WR breaks a tackle it is a TD.

A human player may have made a different decision than the sim. But I bet watching good players you would see all three choices happening.

At the time the ball is released the FS is almost 15 yards over the top of the deepest receiver. He shouldn't be in on any receiver, but his distance is a little far of a shell.

I've had the same problem with my Cover 1 against the I form happen a few times. I have play distance set to "short", but the shell is 15 yards over the top of the receivers.

Im guessing the combo of a cover 1, trying to stay deep enough to get to either side to make a tackle if he had to, playing it safe (not going for ints at all obviously and staying deep.)

All of those together keeps his ass super deep to make sure nothing gets taken where it COULD...GO...ALL...THE...WAY!!
