#1 London Monarchs vs #8 Toledo Swords
Last matchup: TOL def LON, 22-14.
Not much stock can be placed in the results of their last meeting since London neglected to gameplan. The two WEPL teams that have monitored the passing game most closely will square off in a rematch of their mid-season duel. In that game, Toledo outgained London by over 100 yards, mostly due to a solid running attack that netted over 200 yards. However, neither team played particularly crisply in a game marred by 7 turnovers. The difference-maker was Toledo's K Steve Berlin with a 5/5 FG performance. Toledo must now prepare for a more solid passing performance from London in conjunction with one of the top rushers in WEPL in Crazylegs Thornton. Does Toledo have enough firepower to upset one of the most solid tactical squads in the league?
Prediction: London 31, Toledo 21
#2 Woodridge Lumberjacks vs #7 Fightin' Texas Aggies
Last matchup: FTA def WOO, 30-27.
FTA finished up the season strong, winning their last four contests to snag the seventh seed in Alpha. It was not the hardest finishing schedule by any means, but they did what needed to be done. The original matchup is rendered almost meaningless, considering it happened in Week One. The key to this contest will probably be how well Woodridge's vaunted secondary can hold league-leading passer Maxwell Smart and his top tandem of receivers. Smart hung up 400 yards and a 70% completion percentage on the Wu-Jacks in the last meeting, but will FTA risk the wrath of Tokey McBong and keep airing it out?
Prediction: Woodridge 30, FTA 27
#3 Paris Philharmonic vs #6 Wembley Warriors
Last matchup: PAR def WEM, 30-16.
Paris has gone about their business very quietly this season, taking care of things in a quick, almost surgical manner. Their wins have rarely been spectacular, but they have been the model of consistency. Wembley, solid competitors in their own right, are no strangers to the post-season. Both teams can present a very balanced offensive attack and are strong defensively as well. Paris has an advantage in the passing game in this game, but will it be enough to stave off a quality Wembley squad when it matters most?
Prediction: Wembley 27, Paris 24
#4 Berlin Blitzkrieg vs #5 E-City Mercenaries
Last matchup: BER def ECM, 45-23.
These teams met just two weeks ago and Berlin steamrolled the Mercs, almost doubling their score, mostly on the strength of a solid running attack. While E-City moved the ball efficiently and with great success through the air, their defense couldn't slow down the Blitzkrieg offense long enough to catch up. Will E-City try to slow the game down to keep it from being a scorefest or will they try to outgun Berlin and risk throwing it to Vasher? Whatever the case, one has to think that they need to control the trenches on both sides of the ball to have a better chance at winning this round one match-up.
Prediction: Berlin 48, E-City 27
