I know folks in most of the armed services. I tip my hat to them. Recommend you start running and getting ready asap.

An honest answer to your question requires explanation. I'll try to avoid platitudes, however, a response within the scope of an already ambiguous question is likely to include shorthand.

I take it "America" refers to the cultural construct and not geographical North, Central, and South. Semantics aside, since the nation state system inaugurated in 1648 in the Peace of Westphalia is relatively a recent development in human history, it is uncertain whether the world system is stable and its sub units worthy of defending.

My views are informed by structuralism and constructivism, but deep down I'm a cosmopolitan in the spirit of Thomas Paine. I'm hesitant to grant my allegiance to the executive arm of the ruling class or to an organization whose ultimate manifestation is an imperialist power. People of this persuasion are likely to be "against 'America.'"

People serving in a military approximating the vision of US Marine Corp Major General Smedley Butler deserve praise. However, people not enamored by the military industrial complex or war profiteering are not necessarily against "America" as a superpower. While their reasons may differ (pacifism to offshore balancing), the current make up of the U.S. military has its share of critics. Be aware there are many who do not wish military personnel luck or thank them for their service because of their participation in the system itself.
