Greetings

just been appointed DC and was going through the play book trying to determ what I had to work against.

I was a bit surprised honestly because there are alot of plays and if one eventually should have a "call" for each possible play then it would be a HUGE task just understanding what needed to be done.

Here are the possible formations

Formations
I, I(3wr), Strong I, Weak I, Goal line, Shotgun, Shotgun (5wr), proSet, Single back, Single Back Big

Type of plays
Inside run, outside run, Short pass, medium pass, long pass

if these are combined there are 41 plays in the playbook.

Well enought that should be possible to handle BUT.. offense might not react the same way depending on which down they are therefore one need to consider the Down too

here are the downs
Downs
First down (normal)
First down (long : due to penalties)
First down (short : due to penalties)
Second and long
Second and short
Third and long
Third and short
Fourth and long
Fourth and short

as you can see thats 9 different situations hence (9*41) = 369 plays

Then we have to consider what time it is in the game. Is it late, and it early etc. Therefor adding the quarters to the calculation

Quarters
First
Second
2 minut drills
Third
Fourth
2 minut drills

this comes down to 6 different possible way making it (6*369) 2214 different situations

Up top of this one have to consider if we are ahead or trailing behind but I think that is probably something only interesting in a 4Q comeback/containment situation hence not adding TOO much maybe a few plays

Okay let me guess everyone havent made 2214 different calls but in theory isnt that want need to be set up ?!? and how the devil can people keep track of it ?

Anyway just a thought now I will head over to http://www.glbwiki.com/index.php?title=Defensive_Playbook for a uptodate reading

Here are some variable that you can get rid of:

Single Big Back - I know its on the defense AI but that play doesn't exist (maybe in the future).
Basic I with 3WR - It happens once every 100 plays or so. Not worth the trouble to make an input just for that.

For a given Formations, there are only so many plays that you can run off of it. For example: Lets take the "single back" formations. The only running play you can do out of that formation is the outside pitch (to the right).

There are actually only about 12-15 different running plays that you can run in GLB.

Most DC will just make inputs based on the Offense formation so there is only 7 variable you really have to deal with (on formation only).

Down and distant variables:

Don't bother with the 1st and short/long. Just assume everything is 1st and 10. Not worth the trouble.
If you want to be very thorough, 2nd and short/long may be worthwhile.
3rd and short/long: worthwhile to do.
4th and short/long: Just keep it the same as 3rd down short/long. By rights it should be the same anyways. On the input, just enter 3 to 4 down. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Quarters:
I used to do this, but it's really a waste of time. A good defense will put the best possible defense setting based on what the offense is doing. It shouldn't matter if its in the last 45 second of the 1st half or begining of the game. The goal of the defense is still the same. Do you really want to change it to a less effective defense setting just because it in the last 2:00 of the game?

Thanks for the reply

... seem reasonable to think like that.
Specially the Quarters yes Defense should be Working that arse off no matter what situation and placing the "best" possible defense..

All you need to do is set it up by formation. That's all that's needed, people are continually trying to out think themselves and it's a fruitless venture.

Especially the way this game plays out. There are so many comebacks in games I believe because people go into a soft defensive mode once they are up. It only takes a few successful plays to begin to wear down the D's confidence, and the next thing you know the game is lost. The adage "Prevent Defenses only prevent you from winning" seems to be very true in this game.
