WASHINGTON - After spending the better portion of a century as the sponsor of the National Spelling Bee, the E. W. Scripps Company has been ousted in favor of a cyber football team.
The Washington Caps of Goal Line Blitz have entered into a long term agreement to sponsor the competition.
"They're based in Cincinnati," noted National Spelling Bee board member Patricia Robinson. "We really wanted to find a local organization, and really, what would be better than the most prolific football team on earth?"
Robinson also noted that football being another completive competition played a role in their decision.
"See, what we're trying to do here is teach kids how to save time. I mean, we all know time is money," added Washington Caps principle owner, Admerylous. "Just look at us. Not only were we incredibly unoriginal in the selection of our team name, but we cut corners by shortening it to just Caps. Pretty clever, huh?"
The decision was a bit of a shocker to Scripps.
"Not even two years after the death of Charles E. Scripps, our chairman," Scripps spokesman Jose Perez blurted at a news conference. "Charles, and his father Robert had great love for this competition. The family, and company, are in disbelief."
At an unveiling party, several Caps players were in attendance.
"Unbelievable!" shouted brownryango. "I've been a proponent of proper spelling and grammar my entire life. I've spent my time the last couple years trying to teach idiots on several game forums on the internet. They laugh at me, but I keep fighting the good fight."
Also in attendance was heralded strong safety Prince Darius."We're better than everyone," he said. "Not even a 130 year old media company can stop us."
"Clearly," agreed Admerylous. "PD doesn't lie. We're better than any other football team, and we're pretty super at spelling, too. This is a natural fit."
