...Other than sacking them on 1st, and 2nd, and giving them a 3rd, and 20...What, in your experience, is the best pass defense for 3rd, and long running a 4-3 defense?

If they are 3rd and 20...you need a quarter D.

Play a cover 2, maybe 3.

Use dime man under vs. 2-3 WR on 3rd and long.

Cover 0 doubles WR1, WR3 and the TE (no safety help)
Cover 1 doubles WR1 and the TE (safety plays mid field)
Cover 2 doubles WR1 ("standard" safeties)
Cover 3 doesn't double, but CB1, CB2 drop back into the area where the passes are most likely, while CB3, CB4 and SS cover the WRs (FS plays midfield)
Cover 4 should not be used on 3rd and 10
