Just thought I'd send you this because I know you are from Florida. Anyway, I live in Oxford, MS and there is a high school about 20 miles from here that is pretty damn good in football called South Panola.

South Panola is playing the #1 team in Florida 6A (Apopka, FL) on ESPNU at 7pm central time (I think that's right) on Friday night. South Panola has won 78 consecutive games, the longest winning streak in the country, and 5 straight state championships. The last time they lost was in the state championship 6 years ago. Anyway, I'm not sure if you watch any high school ball, but that should be as good as any college or pro game this weekend! Check it out if you can.

We live with Byrnes right down the road from us. They are in pretty heady company these days and play just about all there non-region games against tough out of state opponents. Hopefully they can finish the season undefeated and hold on to that #1 national ranking. They won the state championship game last year 48-9.

Yeah, I know about De La Salle. They have the all-time longest winning streak at 153 games or something like that. Some other school had over 100. De La Salle is good no doubt, but they play in California. California's game is baseball. South Panola has the 3rd longest all time streak now at 79 games. They beat Apopka 28-18. SP pretty much just ran the ball up the middle the whole game. It was kinda funny. Apopka had some really speedy guys though, and played a good game.

Anyway, they have SP ranked 20th in the nation, but I think that's BS. If they were in a bigger state like Florida or California they'd be ranked higher.

The only team that I see with a chance to beat SP in the near future is Olive Branch, MS. Olive Branch beat Pahokee High School in Miami in an exhibition game to open the season. That was a close game though, 48-47. Pahokee had won 28 straight before that. Olive Branch has only given SP one good game the last few years though. I think Pahokee goes to play Byrne in SC on TV this year though. Is that right?

Really? Have you lived here? I grew up in Fla and actually went to 3 diff HS (Miami Palmetto, St. Cloud, and Lincoln HS in Tally), so I feel I can do a pretty good job of rating the play and CA along w/ Texas are huge football powerhouses.

To be honest, I don't know much about SP, but if they were in a bigger state like Fla or CA, there is a pretty good chance that their streak would not have ever reached the 79 games it is at now. Having a team just ranked in the nation is a very, very good achievement and most of those teams could beat each other on any given day.

Oh and I'll add that it is very impressive that they beat a team as strong as Apopka and I wish them the best this year for sure!

I don't mean any offense to California, but it's not the south when it comes to football. Baseball on the other hand, California is great at. If De La Salle played here they may not have one all those games. It goes both ways.

Below is a study from the 2006 season. There's a sports forum I post on regularly and a guy on there did this study.

Just finished up a project I started in October with the purpose of tracking the geography of MLB, NFL & NBA players at the regional, state and metro area levels. The result is a powerful tool to estimate the overall quality of a sport at the high school level in a given area. The output statistic for this study was a "Players Per 1 Million Males" ratio. To integrate the three sports together, I calculated the ratio between the average proportion of athletes from the given area for each sport over the proportion of that area's general population. So if California is 10% of the US population but is home to 20% of the players in each of the three leagues, the MLB-NBA-NFL PROD RATE = 2.0, and it would read something like "California produces athletes at a rate 2.0x the national average."
