It seems to me that speed isn't at all necessary to have an effective DT, especially for a NT who you just want to clog the middle with.

Its not necessary, I have seen many that have done well without speed.

The dominant DT's that I've seen seem to have around 40 speed so not a ton of speed, but it can't be neglected either.

A more interesting question is for a pass rushing DT, which is more important - speed or vision?

I would say vision in general performance. But for pass rushing you need speed to get the sack and not just the hurry, so again its a balance.

I've seen DTs and NTs with very high speed that have done well. I've also seen those with about 30 speed that have done well.
