My safety has quite a few tackles (averaging 6.3 per game), but that's partly due to us being a bad team (we're 1-2) and partly due to him being the fastest player on the defense, with the highest vision, and good closing speed. Only one of our CBs has higher agility.

So far, this is what my FS has done this season:

Two forced fumbles...

Two pass deflections...

http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=106382&pbp_id=1371659 (not sure how he deflected this one)

Basically all of his tackles have been on runs that have been between 4 and 8 yards. Although, he did get up into the box for a stop on this one...

Well, of course you're going to have exceptions and (super)star players for each position. If the FS gets the job done. Also, a lot of their production can have something to do with the rest of the team usually. Quite often, if the FS makes the tackle in the backfield, you can basically say there's 10 other guys on that D who just screwed up their assignments. The way I see it, SS should be making more tackles than FS, in general. One of my favorite safeties, Darren Sharper moved to that position after Butler had quit playing.

That's Reed's NFL profile, btw, 39 tackles and 7 INTs last season. I'd say not too much. Compare to their SS's record, though.

Of course then again, in the real world, coaching and communication and how the D agrees to play on the field also has a lot to do with their performance and tactics. Personally, haven't been able to watch NFL, Super Bowls aside, so I haven't seen Reed in action.

Oh, the difference, Reed plays for Ravens.

Damn. Caught me.
Lets face it, there's something really cool about being under valued and very important. Something about glory of humility or some such crap.
Takes a special person (idiot?) to enjoy it.

Takes one to know one, I guess.

Cool or idiotic or whatever, I would have never traded that position for good, best spot to see the game.

And I've heard two versions (jokes?) about picking the FS when putting together a team:

1) Take the skinniest and pussiest player on the team and put him there (and hope you never need him).

2) Take the guys with most brain and the brawnier one as SS and the brainier one on FS (and hope you never need him).

And then #3 could be a combination of those two above.

lol I know that

but still not a bad thing for a FS to have interceptions usually it means he can read plays and make a jump on them well in this game you want a good FS who can shut down their part of the field but if he can get 2-6 turnovers why wouldn't you want that

Never said I didn't want that, but I think first you need to get your primaries in order and then go for the picks and try to cause turnovers. Getting INTs for your FS shouldn't be the #1 focus IMO but rather a secondary focus. And I believe that was the main intent of Tappajasorsa's post as well.

Then, one could have a philosophy of building the D around safeties which might be interesting, but I don't think that would work that well in the long run, especially at higher levels.

I had good stats last year. 50 tackles, 7ints, 25pds, 4ffum and a frec. On a good playoff team (last year at least).

Depending on the defense the team plays, your safety may not get a lot of chances for picks or tackles

While I haven't been having too many PD's this season. I just had a game with 4 Tackles 1 FFum and 1 Int.
(I'm more of a hard hitter safety.) And being the DC of my team I overhauled the AI this game to put my guy in zone more often than not. The one thing I think I need more of is Vision and Super Vision. So far this season I have not given up a big play or missed a tackle. There have been some plays that were given up (not particularly by my guy) because of the piss-poor pursuit they give defense.
(1 slow guy stopping the whole team's pursuit because you cannot push people out of the way)
