I'm glad I changed my mind. 
I had Kalamazoo in Alpha for most/half of season 0. Season 1 began and I was thinking I just wanted players. Bort turned my team into a CPU team just before the season started. Ron Dash played for a Canadian Pro team, Alexander played for the Dump Trucks, and my LB Ernie Sims played for Kentucky Wildcats. After 3 games I changed my mind. K-Zoo was still CPU, I took back control and began collecting players for our 4th game of season 1. Eventually over time I got Dash, Alexander and Sims on my team as well.
