Here's the playoff picture after 12 games.

The number in {brackets} next to each team is their "magic number." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_number_%28sports%29 ) Any combination of wins by your team or losses by the team you need to finish ahead of means you clinch a playoff spot.

EASTERN CONFERENCE
1 Akron Assassins 12-0 [CLINCHED PLAYOFF SPOT] {1 for 1st round at home}
2 Alpine Golfers 11-1 [CLINCHED PLAYOFF SPOT] {3 for 1st round at home}
3 Chicago Bruins 11-1 [CLINCHED PLAYOFF SPOT] {3 for 1st round at home}
4 Memphis Ghetto Dawgs 10-2 [CLINCHED PLAYOFF SPOT] {4 for 1st round at home}
5 North Carolina Lighthouses 9-3 {1}
6 New Orleans Eagles 7-5 {3}
7 Klamath Falls Grizzlies 6-6 {4}
8 Tampa Vipers 6-6 {4}
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
9t Richmond Speed 5-7 {6}
9t Schenectady Comets 5-7 {6}
11 Philadelphia Brokebacks 5-7 {6}
12 South Beach Tokers 4-8 {7}
13 Denver Stallions 3-9 {8}
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
14 The Forgotten One's 1-11 [ELIMINATED]
15 Elk Rapids Elks 1-11 [ELIMINATED]
16 Orlando Mambas 0-12 [ELIMINATED]

Alpine, Chicago and Memphis have each clinched playoff spots, while North Carolina is now just 1 win away from punching their ticket as well. Akron continues to roll and needs just 1 more win to guarantee a top-4 finish and home field for the 1st round of the playoffs. But will they get it? They face Chicago and Memphis in back-to-back games coming up next, which will be tough.

At the other end, The Forgotten One's and Elk Rapids are out, and South Beach and Denver are on the brink of elimination.

5 Omaha Dogs 9-3 {1}
6 Hyborian Divine Messengers 9-3 {1}
7 Chattanooga Quarantine 8-4 {2}
8 Rocky Mountain Rampage 7-5 {3}
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
9 San Francisco Wildcats 6-6 {6}
10 Houston Apollos 5-7 {7}

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

13 Trojan Warriors 2-10 {10} [ELIMINATED]
14 Oakyville Nungas 1-11 [ELIMINATED]
15 Dakota Ruffians 1-11 [ELIMINATED]
16 Ambridge Bridgade 0-12 [ELIMINATED]

Albuquerque has clinched a playoff spot, and Reno, Omaha and Hyborian could all be next if they can get just 1 more win.

At the other end, Corvallis and Trojan are both out, and Kalamazoo and Houston are both on the brink of elimination.

Both of the undefeated teams have some tough games coming up. It will be interesting to see if they can stay unbeaten going into the playoffs. Btw, are you sure the Elks are officially eliminated? I'll have to go double check your numbers

Yep, the Elks are out.

There are 4 games left. If the Elks win out, the best possible record they can finish with is 5-11.

To get in the playoffs they have to finish 8th or better, which means they'll have to finish with a better record than either Klamath or Tampa... both of whom are currently 6-6. If one (or even both!) of them goes oh-fer, they'll finish 6-10... which still puts them ahead of a 5-11 Elk Rapids team.

Elk Rapids is eliminated.

Sorry, we had to put a bit of a dent in the Comets' playoff hopes. No hard feelings

Yeah, but all that pales in comparison to then-Michigan State coach John L. Smith slapping himself across the face at the end of a post-game press conference in 2006.

O_O

Smith was mad at Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, and apparently thought that slapping himself was a "clever" way to insult him.

Never mind that Michigan State's opponent earlier that day had actually been Illinois, not Notre Dame, or that the loss to Notre Dame had happened several weeks earlier. He was STILL mad at Charlie, dammit, and he wasn't going to waste a "golden" opportunity to insult him, no-sir-ee!

Gee, who is John L. Smith coaching now? Oh, nobody? Because nobody wants a bat-shit insane coach who slaps himself at press conferences? What a pity.
