Yeah, it did get re-named "Champion League" in 104 but was basically WL.

Before the crash of 99 was the last real partial season of WL. It was kind of thrown back together in the new 99 but (IMO) never fully recovered. Then got it the "CL" moniker for the 104 rollover. And that lasted through 108.

The new system exposes more teams to the top talent so they can grind away at the process of going from good to great. RC26 also doesn't have to play himself 8 times a season anymore. It was getting pretty bad with the top owners with multiple teams all in 1 league.

Ok, very informative--thank you.

From a business perspective, 10 guys paying $1,000 is always a better target than 1,000 guys paying $10, always.

You're right in most cases, but GLB's goal should be to drive engagement. Targeting a low volume of high paying customers doesn't work when you need a large community to be successful. I'd make the arguement that if GLB had 100x the user base now, it would be in a much better financial situation. Sure expenses go up like server costs, but marketing can go way down. The more people engaged, the more you'll have referrals. A lot of us remember when GLB exploded out of nowhere. What a time that was. All referrals, I read about it on a team message board.

Social media advertising goes a long way too. I have a part time business that I spend only $10 a day to advertise. I'm currently getting 4:1 return for every $1 spent. It works, even though I hate social media.
