should cover whomever he is defending. The more positive the number, the more of a cushion he should give whomever he is covering.
Some peeps (like me) like to cover tight when young (early in your dots' career) and give more cushion later... but never into the positive side of the slider. Reason? If you build your CB correctly, he should be able to close up the smallish gap you give (later) and make INT's or deflects. But... you can lure QB's into "thinking" the receiver is open by giving a little gap. Took me many seasons to learn that trick.
