I am have trouble finding a basic, easy to understand answer for these two features. What is a VP used for and why is it apparently a disadvantage to use your SA early?

Don't worry too much about VPs at this stage. You don't get them until level 25.

Regarding SAs, these do not benefit from ALGs, and as such, shouldn't be added until the very end of the build (level 60 +)

Thank you! So I am understanding the ALGs now. But, when I read the description of SA, it will say increases chance to..or increases ability..so on and so forth. Why would I not put in points now to better my odds? Sorry, I just can't seem to wrap my mind around this yet.

The majority of people play this game to have the best dot possible at plateau. If you add SAs too early, your dots will have a small advantage at the lower levels, but will be well behind by the time they reach level 79.

It is best to get your highest ability as high as possible, as quickly as possible to take advantage of the free points (ALGS) that you receive when your player levels up.

As such, most people will train and spend SP on their highest attribute up to 78-83 and then train and get ALGs until that attribute is at 99, then train it over to 100 and let ALGs do the rest.

Usually this is done as part of a training regime that starts with intense training and adding SP until 68-73 and then switches to multi-training of three and then four attributes. There are other threads that give you a really good idea of how to plan a build for level 79 value, but just understand that the basic concept is to get your most important attribute up fast and as high as possible, then to get your top four attributes up as fast and as high as possible to maximize the value you get from the increases at level-up (ALGs).

The reason you don't spend points in SAs is because: (1) they don't get better over time like your majors and minors; and (2) the opportunity cost of adding points into SAs is that your majors and minors are not being maximally trained and levelled.

Think of it like making a cake. If you don't build a good base (the interior of the cake) then the icing (the SA's) ain't gonna help it much. SA's "enhance" your Skills. The Juke SA works MUCH better for a HB with agility in the 90's or better... than it would for a HB with 50 agility. So you want to spend 99% of your time and effort making your skill set as good as possible... then add in the SA's to "flavor" the dot.

All good advice for making good end build players, and as lex stated above, that's what most of us who have been playing for a while are aiming for. Horrible advice for new players imo. To be quite honest anyone of you reading this who are really new to this game have pretty close to a 0% chance of making a first (or hell second/third) generation player that a good team will want at level 79 (plateau). Unless you are willing to get greasemonkey scripts, and research, and practice (yeah practice) building good dots in a virtual (outside of the game) simulator on building dots before you start building real dots. Much more likely, you'll spend a bunch of time bored because you likely don't have many players since you're probably not wanting to drop a bunch of money on a game you have no idea how to play at this point. Then if you stick it out to the end (highly unlikely) you will catch on with a team either in a league that no one cares about and isn't much fun to play in, or on a shitty team in a good league that get's it's ass kicked all season. In either case your best chance for enjoyment will be a team that some people at least care about to be active in the team's forum, and that ain't happening much either guys.

If you want my advice, build your first few dots however you want. Put points into SAs, Even out your attributes. You have a much better chance doing that of catching on with a low level team that cares and is trying to win at low level. I can promise you that if it's the first dot you've built you will retire it in a few seasons anyway. Plus this way you have a chance to catch on with a group of guys who might help you better understand how to make your next generation of dot better.

Better yet, PM this dude:

http://goallineblitz.com/game/home.pl?user_id=100593 (sorry to put you on blast Al)

Ask him for an invite to the rookie challenge. Guys build dots with the intended purpose of of seeing how good we can make them perform for one season (with no boosting, AEQ, or anything else that would cost you real $). But many of the best players in the game make dots for this challenge every season and you still have time to get into it. It's a perfect way (imo) to get into this game.

Or try to hook on with a pee-wee team (another structure that is designed for a single season and then retire). Make your free dot there for a few seasons until you get the hang of the game a bit more.

If you really are new to this game though, please do not try and/or expect to make a really good player that good teams will want in your first few go rounds. It simply will not happen. This is not meant to drive you away from this game btw. If you give it a chance you will love (or hate) the depth of the game. Just don't expect to be good at it for a while. Many of us have been doing this for 4/5 years and we're still pretty meh truth be told.

Threadkiller is "kinda" right. A lot of people who 1st come here get discouraged when their dots go one of 2 ways... either they're built wrong... which makes them preform AWESOME at lower levels... but then nobody wants them later because their builds get passed by by those who build them "right". But if you build them "Right", then you're not going to get the performance you think you should... at first. Later, when you've spent many seasons and a LOT of time on your dots, they'll be good... then better... then better still. So while the advice given to you seems "off" and counter-intuitive... it does build solid "long term" dots. Just don't get discouraged. This game isn't simple.
