I think that's kind of what decline is about...if you intense train or put all your BTs into SPs to keep vision and catching up while your speed and jumping decrease due to age, then you can basically make that happen. Instead, we all retire once plateau ends.

have you seen the forums after an effective level rebalance? shit hits the fan and nothing even changes
Pretty much these.
I mean, a training system like foo is suggesting would be more realistic, sure. But "more realistic" does not equal "more fun."
Remember, adding injuries would make the game more realistic too.
There once a baseball mmo game called DIY Baseball. In that game when you train some skill, you lose some point in other skill. When you reach some age you need to train to prevent your skill decline. That game is already gone, I can only find some video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR_Ctuxellw
And tbh, that system is pretty boring. (Compare to GLB system)

i think injuries and other realistic elements (penalties, real INT returns, etc). would make the game more fun.
as to the OP, it would be interesting to have both "training" and "practice." some things won't improve no matter how much training you do--you have to be on the field with other folks practicing. maybe football skills (tackling/catching/etc) would require practice time and physcial skills would require training.
remember the old training system? it has specific drills for improving attributes or multiple attributes. i think that was more realistic.
i also think the way dots decline could be improved. in reality, some older guys get better at some things (for example Ed Reed) even if their overall physical skills slip. real world athletes never "plateau"---their abilities rise and fall in different ways with age, conditioning, coaching or mental attitude/commitment

Note, there is another that is fairly new that has injuries but it doesn't have all the other boo boo that irritates so many others either. First time I looked and saw an injury on the play, I kind of felt like it was more realistic and doesn't really hurt anyone as the players are not owned and paid for.
