What does a returner lack in that would cause him to make the cut before the wedge blockers engage? Making the cut into heavy traffic as opposed to into the open after the blocks engage

Too much speed / not enough speed on the wedge.

A lot of times it is entirely due to the speed of the dots coming at the returner and the distance of the kick that determine kick return success.

I have tried alternating both the wedge speed and weak/str side up field block. My returner is pretty solid for lvl and plan,but with a good wedge and clear open field,still I am missing something. att's or SP for returner or blocks...something

The cut ALWAYS comes before wedge engage for our scheme, which is why I asked bort the Q/A question

Speed coming down should, if I am not mistaken from bort speak, cause the returner to look to open field, at or post block

not cut into it pre block

Your wedge did it's job... it was your front line that didn't do it's job. I know others do things differently but I'm not a fan of big slow guys on the outside. Unless they're STOP guards, centers, or tackles, they simply don't have enough speed and agility to be useful out there. Fine in the Front wedge... not on the outside. Both of your OT's in your OU2 and OU3 slots did nothing but whiff their blocks. That left your BW guys with a 3 against 6 odds. Not good. Your returner chose the path of best value and got what he could. Sitting there behind the BW guys he'd've been tackled for less of the gain than he achieved.

Here's a recent play my returner and my setup did;

Note that the 4 "Stooges" are all STOP centers. (Also, our dots are just a few levels below your dots.) Note their positions and which dots I use where. You'll see the OU's drop WAY back during the kick, then engage their blocks. Put both your play and my play side by side and see what is different and what works (and what doesn't). And, if you watch closely, you'll notice Taz also makes his cut before the Back wedge guys engage their blocks. That's kinda what is supposed to happen. The returner should "see" where his best yardage is available and get whatever he can... if not all of it (TD). Hope some of this helps ya, green guy.
