MLB/SS were cover backs Strong, they immediately cover TE/WR2 then back off to zone...... quite a bit of a delay, would have thought they would immediately go to zone then choose targets.

No. Because of where they're placed, once the ball was snapped, the WR and the TE entered their "area" and became their coverage. Once the WR and TE left their "zone", they dropped out of coverage to go back to covering their "zones".
My advice would be to either deepen their zone area or to start them farther away from the LOS. Also, you might check their personal tactics to be sure they're not set to "go for INT/PD" instead of "play loose and don't get beat deep".

And, actually, if you wanted to make a suggestion from this play, I would suggest that; as long as there are no other receivers in their area (passing a vision check to be sure they SEE there are no other receivers in their area), then they should NOT abandon their coverage. Zone shouldn't mean "sit on a spot in the field no matter what and only cover things in your "spot""... zone coverage should "cover any player in their zone AND CONTINUE TO COVER as long as there are NO OTHER RECEIVERS near, or entering their zone.

Your Dot builds probably aren't optimal for zones yet either. Plus, the best zone dots I've ever seen are generally build somewhat different than man coverage.

I suspect he had them set for a "medium zone" ProKop. Check out where they went to AFTER the receivers ran past them. If that's true, then placing them so close to the LOS caused them to go "coverage" really early... and then their "zone obligation" caused them to abandon their coverage once those receivers passed out of their original zone area. IMHO, anyways.

Cover immediately but like you said if vision check saw no other players entering their zones then don't abandon initial coverage...

I guess all plays should have a 2-3 second timer where going zone is overruled if players already passed through.

Cover zone deep the Defender shouldn't abandon coverage but at the mid range area should maintain their zone and the reason for this is to defend against mid range passes, if the defender leaves their zone assignment then that leaves the mid range passes uncovered (drag routes/cut back/slants).

i don't think a timer would work because player speed varies from rookie & up.

Yes. And, also, setting up a zone/man combo defense isn't easy. But when you get it right, it's very hard to pass against. An alternative to bama's thoughts would be to locate your original positions deeper in coverage (farther away from the LOS). This would cause your "zone dots" to move forward at the play's beginning, covering anything that got in their "area" along the way. But, as bama says... that also leaves short passes and screens less defended.
