Since FG's are divided by 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50+ it makes me wonder if there's a difficulty spike between each kicking category. Has anyone observed anything like this?

There is one at 51 or 52. A long time ago people were kicking ridiculously long FG's so bort added code in to make the difficulty in kicking FG's over that range vastly increase as you went beyond that distance. It was something in the low 50's, could have been 51, could be 53. As for the other ranges, not sure. I think it's more of a break down than an indicator that there is a significant change at those distances.

As to the statistical divisions, though, that's probably just that way for convenience. It's how NFL kicker stats are generally formatted as well.
