Thanks for the compliment , I think this is my 7th season with this player and he's never been a starter which is a little saddening when I look at all of the players who are starting on the teams I've played on

No, it costs bonus tokens. It costs tokens to either build them yourself or take a chance on getting something good in the store, then 30 bonus tokens for each upgrade up to a total of 300 for all ten.
