Any question about time gets my brain into quantum physics and space/time continuums’ and the ghost of Albert Einstein talks to me in my head... it gets weird.
Overall you're saying what I tried to say with one small caveat... being an electronic game based on number logic, I believe that once the ball is snapped, the QB begins looking for a receiver as soon as that ball is in his hands. If he's under center, he's looking while he drops back... and if in shotgun he starts looking once the ball reaches his paws. I doubt the difference of time between a under-center snap and a shotgun snap, from the ball in center's hands to the ball in QB hand, is the same (although there could be a difference... it would be a VERY SMALL difference of time at best).
I totally agree that, overall, you want plays that work. Especially because there is no current passing plays where the receiver catches a ball and runs out of bounds on purpose to stop the clock. Since that type of play doesn't exist, the next best is out routes and HOPE the WR gets out of bounds. (I suspect Yellow 1's question is linked to an earlier suggestion... or two... of his concerning how teams don't use the time wisely at end of 1/2-or game.) In that regard, most OC's I know want plays that move the ball in big chunks rather than short completions since the clock usually is not your friend in the last 3 minutes of a game. So I absolutely agree with your very last sentence.
