I know zones suck I just want to understand them better in terms of how they work in this game.

How long is a dot in "Zone" mode for. My current understanding is they are in Zone Mode untill the start covering a potential receiver and then they're in "Man Coverage" mode.

So this tells me stuff like the Ball Hawk VA and Zone Focus SA deactivate in these instances, and if I'm right I can tell my friend it's a bad idea.

Uh... a player in zone only leaves "zone" mode when in pursuit of a pass, or a rush... when they're in coverage... they're still in zone.

While in coverage... Zone Focus SA is ongoing.
After the pass is released and the vision check is passed... Ballhawk is activated.

And zones don't suck. They serve their purposes... in fact most top defensive schemes utilize C2 and C3 schemes.
Full zone defensive schemes are for the most part no longer viable.

I remember when it first started out that players were in zone until they started covering someone. I also knew that Zone coverage had changed little by little over the last 10 or so seasons but I didn't pay too much attention to all the small changes since I didn't coordinate defense.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't using the man coverage coding when receivers are in proximity to them

Cover 2 is very effective against a range of plays

Teams that use what I call "all-zone defenses" on any given play usually suck on that play. But smart application of man/zone mixed coverages works very well. While CB's do play in zones sometimes... most "zone defenders" are LB's and safeties... and for those, Zone Focus and Ball Hawk are decent SA's (ball hawk seems to have taken a hit to it's effectiveness in the last few seasons so it's not as potent as it once was... but it still works well enough).
