in addition to/or rather than being able to customize personnel in the output using the existing custom slots, wouldn't it be conceivably simple to code it so that each output (offense and defense) had a pull down that let you select one of the preset depth charts you already have for your team?

this seems like it would be easy to do and offer an extremely robust addition to gameplanning.

defense example: suppose I have 4 coverage CBs on my team and 4 combo CBs. for some outputs (vs. SB Spread, for example) I'd have an output that used a dime package and select the preset depth chart that has the 4 coverage guys at CB 1, 2, 3, 4, while vs. Pro Set I might use a different preset.

offense example: suppose its 4th and inches and I want only runblocking OLs in there, I can select a play and chose the depth chart preset that has only runblockers on it.

It gives both the offense and defense what would amount to unlimited custom slots at every position without anything complicated to code.

yes, it would be extra work for coordinators, but it would be worth it to most I think and no one would have to use it.

it would be balanced since both O and D could do it.

It seems like this should have been done when depth chart presets were first installed. I'm no programmer but adding one pulldown to the output box seems like an easy thing to do.

I have a feeling this would cause a lot worse extreme builds than we already have ...

And create tagging nightmares for DCs ...

And make it a game of who can play switcharoo the best, more than *actual* game planning?

I like it, fogie. I worry about possible bugs in making it work right, but it makes sense and that's good enough for a +1

i used to be in favor of allowing this but as i watch real football, you dont see o-line swapping out like that very often extreme builds are already ridiculous enough as is. they need to get rid of individual tactics, since the o-line knows what the play is going to be, and let the build dictate how well they do it.

-1 You are taking all the strategy of the game away and making everything annoying.

I'm all for making things more realistic, but this is pretty far from a simulation of real football at the moment-- if it was then all players on a team wouldn't be the same age and players would have the energy to be true "starters" who play almost all of the snaps, etc.

Uhh.. no

As someone already said - this would lead to ridiculously specific builds. Sorry Fogie - bad idea.
