Constantly have seen the counter sweeps running through the LOS

What sense does it make to have the back run back into the defenders waiting for them?

If this is WAI, let us know the reasoning as to what purpose this play serves when the pathing voids any reason for using it. Unless the O-line pancakes every D-linemen, this is a wasted play and needs adjusting or thrown out altogether.

Play works great if there isn't any D on the outside to contain.

Hopefully... this doesn't happen a great deal, only because we don't run the (broken) counter sweep play that much, casual is another story. But when it happens, I understand it is possibly because of the outside defender.

This makes the play even more interesting as the ball carrier can spot a defender 5+ yards away, but not the ones he runs into 2 yards away?

Blocking is one things, vision and decision making is another. I guess the ball carrier knows that lead blocking needs some work too and says "SCREW THAT, I'M RUNNING INSIDE"
